Saturday August 10, 2013  update #539
I never got much accomplished today other than the usual mundane chores.   My mind was occupied with the “Sock Hop” tonight at Joe’s Secret Garden.  Richard Verkley from Hearts Of Gold had said that he had requested this night so I expected a few people to show up in period costume.
Since our wardrobe is extremely limited here it took some thinking to come up with a short and pants to go with that era.  First I smeared my hair with olive oil and slicked it into a wave and ducktail.  Then I got a shirt that I could raise the collar and roll up the sleeves to my armpits.  The pants needed the rolled up cuffs to show off my white socks.  I found some dark-rimmed reading glasses, a-la-Buddy Holly, and I was good to go.
I was a little self-conscious on the bus and walking up the busy Las Americas but I arrived shortly after 5pm.   Bella was following later in a cab and I doubted very much that she was dressing up.
It was a very small crowd tonight and as they arrived I was dismayed to see that I was the only person dressed for the occasion.   Finally one lady came in like a 60’s flower child and we were the only two in costume.  Oh well, we had fun anyway.   They were supposed to hand out prizes but that didn’t happen.  It was great to have the real old music playing in the background.   And, no, I did not take any photos of myself as a greaser.
That was today’s excitement.  Cheers, Al

Friday August 9, 2013  update #538
I had a bout of acid reflux at about 3am so that kept me up for a good while.  When I did go back to bed I decided that today would just be a day of rest.
Bella actually slipped out for a while this morning to get some exercise with a short walk.  She continues to progress satisfactorily and should be back to her old self very shortly.
I spent most of the day, even during my usual chores, to attempt to get a definitive shot of Tom Thumb who is visiting every 15 minutes or so.   I have tried many different settings, using the tripod and remote shutter release and will get better at this as I experiment.  I am not displeased with the few shots I salvaged today but know I can do better yet.
I really should go out and listen to a band tonight and check them out but they play much too late and I don’t have the money to spend right now.
That was today’s excitement.  Cheers, Al

Thursday August 8, 2013  update #537
I was up early because I actually had a paying photography job for some friends Charles & Rommie Reddington.  Charles is a prolific abstract painter and he is looking to market prints of his paintings as well.  I went over with my tripod and set up in an area devoid of shadows to do the actual photography.  Today was actually supposed to be cloudy, but the sun was very bright, making our shooting trickier.   Trying to shoot as straight as possible to avoid having to re-skew all the photos later was a challenge.
Rommie made us a good lunch and then I photographed a stunning coat she had woven on her loom.
The next hurdle was to do the processing of every shot under Charles’ guidance depending on how exact he wanted colours, brightness, etc.   He wanted everything as true to the original colours as possible so it is a good thing he accompanied me back home and we spent many hours processing the photos.  I had taken 2 shots of every painting using different settings, and each of those in both JPEG and RAW format.  We then had the choices to pick the sharper shots to work on.  No matter how close we were, we still had to re-skew almost every photograph and then crop the image so it was all very time-consuming, but Charles seemed extremely happy with the results.
If anyone is interested in any of his abstract paintings, contact Charles Reddington at rommie.charles@gmail.com.
Oh, and we heard that our Coopera group’s lawyer scored a minor victory in court yesterday saying:
Today we reached a legal triumph, SEPS lawyers admitted two circumstances:
(a) they do not have financial information on COOPERA and therefore Superintendete Jacome lied to the National Assembly, partners and investors on losses and
(b) that the decision to liquidate COOPERA was made without a process of defense and with an internal report only.
This doesn’t really have much hope of changing the status quo anyway but it does make us feel more confident that they can’t possibly hold our money much longer, or not give us back 100%.
That was today’s excitement.  Cheers, Al

Wednesday August 7, 2013  update #536
Chores, chores, and more chores, then a nap…
Bella is busy recuperating, getting a lot of bed rest, reading voraciously and playing bridge online.
We got the word from SEPS that the second round of payouts for the Coopera liquidation will run Aug 12-16 for those folks with deposits under $30,000 so we are still on the sidelines waiting.  I am confident that we will get our money eventually, in full, maybe with less interest, because the precedent has been set now.
I went back to Banco Del Austro this afternoon and finished opening an account.   It is refreshing again to have a Bank Manager that not only speaks English but understands the North American mentality.   A second account in Bella’s name is all ready to go as soon as she feels well enough to drop in.  I can pick up my Debit card which will allow Internet access on Monday.  We are able to do wire transfers here and get a prepaid Credit Card so they are much easier to deal with than Banco Pichincha.
Next I went downtown to Fabiano’s Pizza to meet Barry & Maxine who were buying the Canon 75-300 lens from me.   I was early so I decided to try the pizza, because we weren’t terribly impressed the first time we were there but all our friends seem to like it.  It actually was pretty good today, a close second to La Vina.  Barry & Max showed up and we had a good chat while we all ordered more pizza, mine to go, for Bella.  They had just come back from house-sitting in Quito and are soon off to house-sit in Mexico.  They are certainly enjoying life to the fullest.
Bella enjoyed her pizza too, but agrees that La Vina is still Number One.
My camera never left the bag today so I have worked on some more Pase Del Nino photos for you.
That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

Tuesday August 6, 2013  update #535
Well we never did receive any email today about this supposed possible meeting with the President of Ecuador but I wasn’t about to miss it, if it was going to happen.  I was awake at 5am anyway and mulling over the things I would say to him, if I got the chance, so I got ready and headed down to the courthouse area for 9am.
There were several gringos departing for a new location around the corner and down a couple of blocks, past the El Vergel SuperMaxi.  There were tents being set up with sound system and video for an event to celebrate breakthroughs in women’s rights.  Then we were told that the president is not coming until Thursday, but the Governor was going to be at this event, along with other dignitaries.   The original hope again was to try to see the Governor while he attended this event.  Then they also said they apparently now have meetings scheduled this week with the Governor, and the President, to present our issues.   And, depending on whom you talked to, the Government is going to return up to $30k or $31k  to the larger investors (although this is not borne out by the SEPS government website yet).   Hopefully we are finally seeing some progress.
We were all first forced to seat ourselves in the last 3 rows or so of the first tent, supposedly all the other rows were for dignitaries.   Then we were asked to go to the corner and present our case in a more suitable venue so we followed the crowd out of the tent but nothing transpired and nobody seemed to know what to do next.   Then we were asked to go back and sit down in the same area we had just left.   We are just starting to roll our eyes already when we are again asked to move our “protest” to the rear and then the reporters from television and the local papers came out and listened to our lawyer who gave several interviews.  Several banners and signs popped up in the hands of many of the Ecuadorians and at least we feel like something was accomplished.
I figured the situation had run its course so I headed to the book exchange and got another Tom Clancy novel in hardcover.  I also had a duplicated movie to exchange and, lo and behold, right on top of the pile was the new Lone Ranger video.  I can’t wait to watch Johnny Depp in this one.
On the way home I got off the bus early to talk to the English-speaking manager at the Banco Del Austro in our area.  She is very nice and will make it much easier for us to open accounts there.   I gave her some preliminary information and will return with further documentation tomorrow.
I finished my chores at home then it was time to head to Hearts Of Gold for a meeting to work on the Christmas Gala.  With the changes in the bus routes for 2 months, while they rip out a traffic circle on Solano, I wasn’t sure how close they would bring me, or where to catch one home.   I figured it out.
The meeting was well attended and Richard, the founder, attended a rare meeting because he had definite issues about many of our suggestions.  The last meal served at this venue at a big gringo event was sub-par and there is no way he wants anything but the best for our Gala.  We intend for our Gala to be the Event of The Year so we are to go all out to fulfill this desire.   Many great ideas came out of the meeting but will require a complete menu and seating overhaul and a new negotiation with the venue.   Richard wants a test meal that we will all attend with our spouses, which we will pay for, and he is willing to attend the negotiations with the venue to help browbeat them.  I was very thankful to accept that offer.
We had cake after the meeting to celebrate Gayle’s birthday.   I don’t know where they got that cake but it was scrumptious!
Tom Thumb really likes our nectar offerings so he is a regular visitor again.  He even popped up this morning and scolded me because I was too slow to put out his meal.   He is such a little tyrant, but he did let me get a reasonably close hand-held shot this evening.
That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

Monday August 5, 2013  update #534
Bella went to the Doctor this morning and got the vote of confidence to keep doing what she is doing.  She is healing well but must keep up the bed rest for a couple of weeks more.
Bella stopped for groceries on the way home with the proviso that I was waiting at the door when she arrived by taxi to haul in the groceries.
After my chores were done I set up the tripod and tried to get a few more shots of Tom Thumb.  I haven’t got the definitive shot yet, but I’ll keep trying.   There was also an interloper that was soon chased away by Tom.
Yesterday we had notice of a meeting the Ecuadorian Coopera recovery group at 4pm and we were asked to attend, so I went.   People were still filing in at 5pm but we were lucky the meeting commenced at 4:30.  I had this Ecuadorian couple next to me who have lived in Toronto for many years and the husband was returning there next week.
The meeting was held at the #3 level of Government, the Prefecture of the Province which also has several thousand dollars in Coopera so we have an ally here, certainly with more power than we possess.  I was impressed with the orderliness of the meeting and with the basic solidarity of the group.   Anyone was allowed to speak, they just had to come to the front and grab the microphone.  And several impassioned folks did just that.  They even had a great translator for us English folks.  I say he was great because he didn’t try to repeat everything line by line, he waited until the speaker was done and then gave us a synopsis in 5 sentences or less.
At least 3 courses of action were underway.   1. They gave us a “letter to the editor” they intend to give to the press.  2. President Correa is supposed to be in Cuenca tomorrow and they are trying very hard to have a meeting with him, even though he wants no involvement.   They hope they can get 2,000 people in support.  The Ecuadorians will need to get every family member to help out because there were only about 200 folks at this meeting, packing the joint.   3. They got everyone to march up the street to the #2 level of power here, the Provincial Governor’s office on the corner of Parque Calderon.  The Governor was supposed to be there at 6pm but, if he was, he didn’t want to show his face, at least not while I was there.   I didn’t want to miss the chance to catch a bus home.   Anyway that was my first ever participation in a demonstration and it has happened in a foreign country…   I didn’t see any news cameras rolling anywhere but there might have been a reporter on the scene.
So now we are waiting for an email to see if we can, or should, try to see the President tomorrow.   That would be kinda neat in itself.

That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al   Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Sunday August 4, 2013  update #533
I awoke thinking about how to work on those photos from Joe’s again and it took me several attempts to get the right items to work properly.  I had to discard two items supplied because they left annoying edges to deal with.  Anyway I finally got everything finished, and sent, then figured out that I was working for about 75c an hour.
I think I mentioned that I have been drafted to make some sort of birthday display and birthday card for later this month so I got cracking on that too.  So far I have 4 collages that I haven’t figured out yet how I am going to combine….
I also got a surprise commission to take photos of an artist’s paintings so they may be sold as prints, etc.  Hopefully I can get at that later in the week.
Bella is slowly recuperating and has a doctor’s appointment tomorrow.
There is another Coopera meeting with another large group of investors at a Provincial ministry office tomorrow.   Apparently the Province of Azuay is also a creditor so that may immeasurably help our cause.  Bella sent this to me so I think this is a hint that I should attend.
It looks like we will be having a busy week coming up….
Of course I didn’t get out today so I have processed a few more Pase Del Nino photos for you.

Saturday August 3, 2013  update #532
We got caught up on our sleep today after chores were completed then prepared to go to Joe’s Secret Garden.
It is easy to tell the newbies at Joe’s because they are the only people who show up around 5pm any more.  The regulars don’t show up until around 6pm because a person is usually lucky to see any food before 7pm.
There were lots of new folks tonight, probably close to ½ the crowd which was very small by Joe’s standards.
Joseph now wants me to also put the logos on the photos I send to him so I am going to try tonight and see how long it takes me.   As it is, I am only working for about $1 an hour so the extra work is not really something I want to take on.
Two couples corralled me on the way out and want me to make something up for Joe’s birthday at the end of the month.    I will work on that…

That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al   Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Friday August 2, 2013  update #531
Happy Birthday to my grandson Tyson!!!
Well, last night and this morning the Motion Magique website was redirecting to our actual site but not elegganthooks.com so I had to call Network Solutions again.   Within 2 hours they had everything working, Hallelujah!!!
After chores I headed downtown on a quest for more movies and to try to get the new Lone Ranger on DVD.  I found 8 on my wanted list and blew my $10 budget, so when I finally did find Lone Ranger, filmed in a theatre, I was not able to buy it.   I’ll pick it up another day.
There was a beautiful display of art by 3 artists at the City Hall, 2 of which I liked very much, Guido Marquez and Sylvia Astudillo, so I got a lot of good photos of their wonderful work.   The camera was very busy today.   Even La Merced Church, the old white one, was open today for the first time.
I was working away on my pictures and Tom Thumb came and sat on my rope outside.   He must really like the new nectar I put out today because he was warning away all other hummingbirds for a solid 15 minutes.  I finally decided to chance getting a few shots, first through the screen and window,   Then I slid the window very slowly and he did not move so I took more shots.  Then I got braver and very slowly slid the screen open because it makes a lot of noise usually and he still did not budge so I got a few more.   It is odd how he can look so fat and pudgy when sitting, and so elongated when he is flying.  With practice I will get better at shooting Mr. Thumb.

That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al   Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Thursday August 1, 2013  update #530
Bella is recuperating well.   Thank you to everyone for all the good wishes.   Bella had the vet come to the house to de-worm the cast, total cost $10.
I tried to get a photographer friend to join me on a photo excursion today but he had plans and doesn’t like cloudy days, he needs blue skies to take good photographs.   So I stayed home to work on a few more Pase Del Nino photos instead.
We finally got a reply from Network Solutions saying :
Dear Al,   I apologize for the issue you are having.  I can confirm that the WebForwarding service is working correctly and the issue you are having is not related to our service.  The only time your site does not load, consistently, is if you turn Masking on, to hide the URL you are being forwarded to, so this can mean that your host has their servers configured to not allow URLs on their servers to be masked. This is a common issue, as a lot of major websites such as YouTube, LinkedIn, MySpace and Facebook all block this feature.  This can also sometimes be related to only certain browsers and even certain versions of browsers, which appears to be the issue with your site, as I am able to load the site without any problems, using Internet Explorer, but not Firefox.
Firstly, we can’t get our sites to show up on any browser, including IE, so I fired them off another email.  Then I noted it said not to reply to the email, so I called.  The young lady repeated that the problem is with the “masking” and then indicated that she could fix the issue…….. DUH….   What is the matter with young people today anyway???  Have they not been taught to think past one problem at a time???   UGH!!!  Two and a half weeks of lost business because they aren’t bright enough to apply their simple solution to the obvious problem…  They have now promised that the sites will be working within 24 hours.   If not, I am going to rip somebody a new asshole tomorrow for sure.
The sun is trying to make a very late appearance today but without much success.

Wednesday July 31, 2013  update #529
I slept in today as the exhaustion was catching up to me.  It was a dreary rainy day today so I contented myself with doing chores and getting caught up on a lot of issues.
The afternoon was spent organizing and preparing more photos for eventual sale.   So sorry, no photos again today.
We did call our friends Frank & Margaret to see home they were making out after the flooding in High River inundated their home.   Apparently their area was “sacrificed” to save others and their new condo was under 2 feet of water for 27 days.  Some politician publicly admitted as much and now the Alberta Government is back-pedaling on promises to help people now that the magnitude of the damage is getting known.  Poor Margaret is President of their Condo Association so she has to field a lot of questions and flak from the other irate owners.
Bella continues to improve daily although outings are still not on the agenda.
Today is the anniversary of the 1987 Black Friday tornado in Edmonton.   That is not  date that is easily forgotten.

Tuesday July 30, 2013  update #528

I did chores, then grocery shopping, so Bella could sit home and recuperate.  She is doing very well in her recovery so we don't want to jeopardize all the recent gains.
I don't know what is wrong with my keyboard, but if I don't hammer the "a" it doesn't always print out, so I have to double-check every line.  It is getting annoying already, so if you see a word missing a letter, you will know why.
The afternoon and evening were completely tied up with a meeting of Hearts Of Gold and the subsequent avalanche of paperwork to email.  I was asked to play Secretary (no short skirts) and take the minutes of the meeting.   One of the discussions was about our ideas for this year's Christmas Gala which has clearly outgrown the space at Joe's Secret Garden.  So far, everyone at the meeting approved of our proposals and now we need ratification from the founders, the Verkleys to book the new venue.  We have another meeting scheduled for next week to really flesh out some ideas for this year's Gala that we want to be remembered as the Event Of The Year.   If we can get it advertised before anyone else, hopefully other organizations won't compete with us on that night.
That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

Monday July 29, 2013  update #527
Belated Happy 41st Birthday to our son Greg.
What a strange day it started out to be.    The hot water is still working, thank God, it must have had an obstruction to the gas flow that jarred itself loose.
I received an email from Network Solutions expounding how to optimize our websites so I decided to call that number and give them the gears.   I was put through to a nice young man named Saul who discovered that the web-forwarding is turned on but is indeed NOT working…  Hello….  This is what I told you a week ago…  At least Saul discovered the problem, has created a repair ticket, and things will hopefully be rectified shortly.
Next I decided to try to solve my FTP problem with accessing the website for changes.  This was not working all weekend,… and today it decided to work again, mysteriously….  Maybe this Monday will prove to be the best Monday ever….
It took me all afternoon to process the other half of yesterday’s photos.  Just got done and Bella informed me that Mark & Karen were dropping by.   We had a nice visit and just ordered in supper from next door.   It is kinda neat to have take-out literally 3 feet from our door.

That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al   Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Sunday July 28, 2013  update #526
If you have trouble accessing our business websites for Eleggant Hooks, namely www.elegganthooks.com or www.motionmagique.com please use our generic website http://bourbj.tripod.com/ as it is working well, even though I can’t change anything on it right now.   This has been the most frustrating week.  Still no word on fixing our websites from anyone.
Bella is having very interrupted sleeps so it is a good thing she can remain quiet and recuperate.
The sun was shining in a beautiful blue sky so I had to get rid of some cabin fever.  I decided to take the #16 to Avenida Solano and catch the Turi bus up the hill to the church, etc.  However, that bus never showed up so I walked, and walked, uphill, to the staircase marked with 439 steps and onward and upward some more.  I had a lot of time, so I paced myself.
It started to cloud over and it was pretty breezy, unusual for Cuenca, so hots became a waiting game for the sun to peek through and illuminate El Centro for me.
Once up at the Turi church I followed the road to the right and climbed a hill to get a view of the Inca terrace on the adjacent mountainside.   Not too many folks realize they are even there.  I also got a couple of shots of indigenous people doing their chores.   I caught one old lady on the road gathering firewood, and it wasn’t until I processed the shot that I realized she was barefoot on that gravel road.  They sure are tough people.
On my way back I saw the fellow that had bought the mountaintop to the right of Turi had his business operation in full swing.   He is charging $1 to climb up to enjoy the magnificent views, food, and I saw folks enjoying his swing that extends over the edge of the mountain.  That is not an exercise for the faint of heart.
I hung around Turi for a while hoping to catch a plane or jet coming in over the city centre and I was eventually rewarded.  I had a nice chat with a 42-year-old chap from Tennessee who is scouting our fine city.   He has a wife and 5 kids and is looking to move here and start a business.   I wish him luck.
On my return trek down the mountain, I think I was moving even slower, getting pretty tired by now.  I walked along 24 de Mayo and came cross some pleasant farm animals.  The horse came outside the fence along the road and that did not seem to bother the old indigenous woman working in her garden.
I knew there was a bus stop somewhere along the Universidad De Azuay but it is not marked.  The #16 came by but the driver just pointed forward as he drove up another ½ block.   Naturally he did not wait for me and I sure as heck wasn’t up for running, so that meant I got to rest for 15 minutes.
I got off the bus early to check out a few more movies at my favorite video store and managed to find 4 that might be interesting.
Then I walked to Monay Shopping Mall to pick up KFC for supper as I had instructions, and a $1 off coupon, from Bella.   By this time I am really dragging my a**.
I get home and Bella tells me we have no hot water.  I had just switched the tank that morning and had a hot shower so this struck me as very odd.  We checked the tanks, switched them gain, and back, replaced the tank’s rubber grommet, and double-checked the batteries.  At least we can hear the spark firing but the gas is not getting through the unit for some reason.   It is still under warranty so I am asking my buddy Jorge, via his daughter Gabriela if he can help me get this repaired quickly.
What a nutso few days we have been having!
Hmmmm, 3 hours later and I try the hot water again and it is again working perfectly….   How bizarre is that???
I got a note on Facebook that my Grandson Dawson was going to a Junior A hockey camp in Indiana, driving there 3,000 miles with his other Grandpa, Gordie.  I saw Gordie come up on Skype so I called and my Granddaughter Danai answered, surprising the heck out of me.  Then they put on the video and I was pleasantly surprised to see Dawson and my daughter Jill were also there!!  Apparently Gordie and Dawson are leaving in the morning so it was fortuitous that I happened to catch them.
I won’t get all the photos uploaded today, just about ½.   I’ll do the rest tomorrow.

That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al   Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Saturday July 27, 2013  update #525
Bella is slowly improving and needing to take it easy for a while.   We want to be careful to let those stitches stay in place and not have loose body parts dropping on the floor, lol.    I am doing my best to run the required errands for her and take care of meals and cleanup.
We are still no closer to solving our website issues and it is beginning to wear a little thin.  It is one source of income that we really need right now.
It seems like our money in Coopera will be tied up for  good while longer so I fired off an email to the lawyer leading our group.   The only way we are going to get our 100% return, and quickly, is to call a spade a spade and holler discrimination, because that is what it is.
I got  call from my sister from our home in Okotoks and she was there to help me install TeamViewer on the computer there so I could try to retrieve her daughter’s wedding photos by remote connection.  We finally got the program loaded and operating and I spent a frustrating few hours trying to locate the original photos.  I can find them in Picasa but nowhere else, and Picasa won’t let me take the copies that are there.
I double-checked my laptop, my backpack, and they are not there either.   I checked through all my disks and memory sticks to no avail, the photos are gonzo, and I have absolutely no recollection what I did with them.  It is frustrating me to no end.
Then we got a note from Joe’s Secret Garden that they have no water in their area so the supper tonight was cancelled.   So the only photos I have for you are my feeble attempts to catch the moonrise from my window…

Friday July 26, 2013  update #524
Bella called about 9am to go pick her up at 10:30am so I hustled off and got there on time.  We tried to check out but they would not let her out until the Doctor had seen her again.  So we sat in the room for a short while and I was amazed at the huge private room she had (apparently they are all private rooms in this Hospital Monte Sinai) with a daybed for guests to spend the night plus a huge leather recliner.  The doctor came with an interpreter confirmed the medications Bella would need, and set another appointment  in about 10 days time.
The doctor had checked on her almost hourly yesterday until 11pm so it was a very long day for him.
We can’t help but RAVE about the health care here.  Getting booked for surgery within 2 days is unheard of in Canada, and the total cost was equivalent to a rush flight to Canada.  Bella would have continued very sick if we had waited for her Canadian doctor to come through, and had Septicemia already.   We simply couldn’t have waited.  This is another great reason for living here.
A friend is just setting up a health care plan so I am picking his brain about benefits and costs.   The previous ones we had checked out had big deductibles and a co-pay on top of that, plus hefty premiums so we had opted to self-insure.  This was the first time in 2 years we had needed anything major and the cost is negligible in comparison.
Thank you to everyone for your good wishes to Bella during her ordeal.   She is doing as well as can be expected and I will do my best to keep her still so she can heal better.
Between this medical emergency, problems with all our cash being tied up in the Coopera fiasco, and our business websites being down, this has not been a good week.   Coopera regulators are pushing us to the back of the line at every turn, not caring about the hardships they are causing.  They do not seem to realize that many people had everything invested there and don’t have access to cash anywhere else.  It is time to sue those guys for discrimination.
Sorry, but I have been just too busy today to even think about photography.

That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al

Thursday July 25, 2013  update #523
I apologize...  Anytime we cut & paste anything in this Blog, it screws up everything.
I happened to awake early so I saw Bella off in a cab to Hospital Monte Sinai very early this morning, needing to arrive by 6am.  She is not very good under anesthetic so she does not want any visitors.   First she is to call me when she comes out to let me know how things went.  Then he is to get out on Friday and will just call me when she is ready to come home.
I was waffling on whether or not to go to Gualaceo, a neighboring town, 30 kms away, but a 1-hour bus ride, for a whole 60c.  It was spitting rain and I just missed the #15 so I almost turned around and went home, but knew I would regret it if I did that.
I got to the big bus station, paid the dime to get through the turnstile and got on the Gualaceo bus.  There were only 6 of us on the bus but he pulled out within 5 minutes anyway.  This is a real milk run as they stop to pick up anyone with their arm out but we did get there around 9am.
Gualaceo weather seemed a little more stable as I made my way to the town square, the market square, and the big church, on 3 adjacent corners in the downtown.  They were just getting set up everywhere so I just kept going from one to the other.
To be honest, it was all pretty boring.  The stage event started at 11am and was highly religious with at least 20 priests on the stage.   I got very tired of standing so I spent some recuperation time in the church.    They were doing a brisk business selling candles at the door.
During the whole time I was there, amongst about 1,500 Ecuadorians, I never saw one other white face!!  I was the only token Gringo for the day, which I found really surprising.
I had gone to Gualaceo because I had read the first part of the following description of this festival, but maybe the rest was added later, because I missed most of this stuff….    I was tired and left around 1pm.
Sorry about the bad Google translation.

Gualaceo Party in honor of "Patron Santiago"
The Festival takes place in the town of Gualaceo, Azuay province, on July 25 of each year, in honor of St. James the Greater, patron of the city, commonly called "El Patron Santiago".

Wardrobe
The Dancers
The dancers set consists of four children: three bus-dance-dance and black.
• The bus-dance carried on his head a multi-colored floral scarf, knotted either forward or backward. About the subject body and shoulders carry a cotton cloth dress, a white thin fabric, this dress they call "saendilla" them falls to the knee and carries at its lower edge lace. Another piece is the "Manguilla" which is a short tunic that reaches only the hip.
On the back and the neck tied carry a "stick" of hanging ribbons of various colors they call wings, and neck, tissue bucato of various colors. Also, one of them takes on the right hand a brass bell in his left hand and a stick of chonta with floral panudo moored in half.

All dancers are barefoot and in their presentations interpret the following dances: "Long Street", "Blackbird", "bull", "Balance", "Juntiada", "Chirote wrapped", and others.
The Old
They are entertainers and jesters party. Their number varies but generally usually occur a dozen of them. Do their share of group Quadrille, ie if the latter interpreted Dance Ribbons, the Elders do the same, taking apart a circle with a crooked stick in the center.
His dress is varied and bizarre. They generally take an old sack or casinete cashmere "long, large buttons, pants and shirt current boots or shoes, some of them trimmed with leggings. Their characteristic is the mask made of the same in" rags "and that consists of a white cloth bag "snapper", that covers their entire head and face being approached to shoulders.
On their heads they wear "jimbas" or horsehair braid or twine, a whip in the hands of lignum vitae with a rawhide beta of their men in the kind of "shigra" or leather backpack, and a monkey on his back or "chucurillo" stuffed to make people kiss.
The Quadrille

On the shoulders carry a green cloth bib with a mirror. On this layer "Saendilla". Common straw hat, also with a mirror on its front, but two trilby wearing mirror plus a feather peacock. In the hand carrying a colorful umbrella, the same as the spin when they dance.
During the dances make "figures" or "work" to the sound of a brass band. Among the tasks that run under the direction of the "guides" are: the Curiquinga, the Painada, Number Eight, and Braid Large.
The Pendoneros
The Pendoneros form a kind of religious emblem used in the procession. It consists of a stick about a meter long, which has at its upper end a sphere of setal and on this a cross, in the bottom of the sphere, comes a white cloth that is choked once or twice creating thus a rough spheres of about 20 cm. in diameter, the Lysias not lose their shape by bringing in crumpled newspaper.
The Pendoneras/Pendoneros and are dressed in their finest gowns and carrying the banner with one hand, while with the other bearing a lighted candle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The bus back to Cuenca was packed, standing room only, and they continued to pick up stragglers along the road but then also many folks got off early so most of the trip was full, but everyone was seated.
I myself thought I would be clever and get off closer to the #3 bus on Gonzalez Suarez, I even asked 2 people if I was getting off in the right place and they said yes…  Wrong!!!  After walking for another five miles, I saved myself 25c and made it home on foot.
All told, I spent, 25c to get to the bus station, 10c to get through the turnstile, $1.20 for the roundtrip on the bus, and $1 for a bag of monstrous Timbits.   Total trip cost $2.55.
Whew!!!   5pm and I finally heard from Bella!   I was just going to cab to the hospital to see what was wrong but she says she was just conked out all day on morphine.  The surgery went very well and she expects to be home tomorrow as planned.   All is good with the universe…………
Wednesday July 24, 2013  update #522
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my lovely wife Bella.   May she have many, many more.
Bella was up and gone early for some “fasting” tests prior to her surgery tomorrow, then she was off to her Bridge Club.  It is still so mind-boggling how a surgery can be scheduled here in 2 days when it is closer to 500 days in Canada....
I had lots of chores today and they took several hours to complete, photos, plants, dishes, clothes washing, etc.
My plan was to get out earlier today but Bella left me instructions to haul these bottles of vinegar etc to the other side of the city so that negated any lengthy walking around because those things are darn heavy.   I didn't get away early anyway.
We ended up at Mark & Karen’s new condo for a Birthday supper for Bella.  It is nice that some folks are so good at celebrating special events whereas we are tending to ignore most of these celebrations as we get older.  But there was a glitch, their stove is not hooked up yet, so they took us out for supper.
First we went to the gorgeous Mansion Alcazar on Bolivar but they did not open until 7pm.   We sure enjoyed looking at their courtyards though, heavenly…  Don’t forget that this is right in the center of the city!  http://mansionalcazar.com/en/   Note they have a Trip Advisor Travelers’ Choice Award this year!
So we trudged down to Avenida Borero, north of the Post Office to Carbon, a steak restaurant that Chris & Bettye had told us about.  They had such neat old plaques and posters on the walls.  The menu was tremendous and the food was wonderful!   We’ll definitely go back there again!   Imagine, 400g of Lomo Fino (Filet Mignon/Tenderloin), that’s almost 1 lb of beef, that just melted in your mouth for $10.95.  My tummy is hurting right now, but it is a good hurt.
Bella would not let me take her photo for her birthday, sorry, but she was not feeling well and had had a very busy day.
That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al   Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/
Tuesday July 23, 2013  update #521
Don’t know what was wrong but I just tossed and turned and finally gave up at 3am and went down to watch a movie.   Some of those movies I had picked up weren’t keepers so I was glad to have them sorted before I went to the Book Exchange today.
First we had another meeting with Villa San Carlos to review and clarify their offerings for our proposed Christmas Gala for Hearts Of Gold, tentatively set for December 6.  We have to present this to the “Board” next week so we wanted to be sure we had the straight goods.  We tweaked the menu a bit and made sure everyone was on the same page for a lot of items that didn’t show up in the original quote, and eliminated a lot of boilerplate items mentioned in that quote that were not germane.  We feel a lot better about it now so mark your calendars, as we are pretty sure that everyone will agree with our findings.   We have some ideas for a sort of theme for the night but would welcome any suggestions.
While I was there I had to pick up some special vinegars that Villa San Carlos is able to provide.  I can’t wait to try them out.
I made it to the Book Exchange at the Windhorse Café and exchanged my Dan Brown book as well as two movies.  When I got downstairs my buddy Cork was there so we had a long chat.  Cork is a former Las Vegas comic and always good to keep a conversation going.   I am OK with that because I am not good with small talk and am quite happy to listen to others carry the ball, as long as they are not repeating things over and over.
I decided to go down the Escalinata and catch the #15 home and went by the CIDAP Museum but the darn place was closed again, at 11:30am??!!  Can’t figure that one out!!  The building however is just gorgeous and photogenic.    Then looking over Parque De La Madre I noted that Turi was catching a ray of sunshine so that was a great shot to grab.    At the bus stop this indigenous lady was wearing all the trapping of her tribe, so I did manage 3 photos in total today….
I came home and did laundry and decided to try to catch Tom Thumb if possible but he is not cooperating much today.
Darn it, one of the movies I picked up was a duplicate of one I have already…  That happens occasionally when you get old and can’t remember all the over 300 titles already in your possession.
Bella called that she had been to the doctor’s and was on her way to a hospital for blood-work, etc.  She said her blood pressure was almost non-existent after all that vomiting and diarrhea so she wasn’t sure when she would get home.   She also has a fallen bladder problem that is inherited and would get that checked because that is probably a contributing factor in her recent sickness..
Bella called back to say the options are to wait to get surgery in Canada in maybe a year and a half, and spend $1300 on airfares, or get the surgery done here on Thursday for $1600.   Gee, that is a no-brainer don’t you think??   We have not heard one complaint about the Health Care here, and usually nothing but raves.  Heck the doctors even still do house calls here.   It may be like the 50’s here in many respects but the Health Care is definitely top-notch.
We still have not had a response from Tripod regarding our web-forwarding problems so that is very frustrating.
Monday July 22, 2013  update #520
Sunshine!!   Where did that come from???  It seems like it has been weeks since we have seen the sun so we were not about to waste it.
One thing I needed to do was to try to reach Network Solutions today to find out why our business websites were down.   I finally got through to them through the back door of their marketing arm and then they tell me it is not them, it is Tripod that is causing the problem.  So I fired off a note to them to hopefully get things back on track.
Bella was off on her grocery chores and when she got back, I had completed my upload chores so I grabbed the camera and started walking.  My video shop was closed so I just kept going along the Rio Tomebamba and enjoyed the scenery and the sunshine.  What a difference to a person’s mood when the sun is shining.   I love Cuenca all over again.
I took many shots on my walk all the way to El Vergel and Avenida Huayna Capac.  I found a video store and it took forever to find 4 movies in English.  My feet were pretty sore by now so I grabbed the #15 and made it home.
Bella said she had been upchucking for an hour already and she was still at it 4 hours later.   Not good.
Sunday July 21, 2013  update #519
I was up early to finish off the photos for Joe’s and to get out my Blogs.  Joseph had said he could not access the Dropbox we were using because he had a new computer so I decided to copy all the Dropbox contents onto a memory stick.  However, first I had to download it all into my download folder because it did not let me have any other options.   I have no idea why it took over 3 hours for that process when it took only about 6 minutes to then transfer it all to the stick…..
So I hopped on the #16 and headed west, like a young man, lol, and popped in at Joe’s first.  Now Joseph tells me his problem with Dropbox is only that he forgot the password…   Jeepers, I could have saved 4 hours work!  I know the password…..
Joseph now wants me to also put their logo on all the photos and he will show me how to do it.   I am not sure I want even more work on my shoulders in this regard.
Then I made an unannounced stop to visit my friends Bettye and Chris whom I hadn’t seen in a couple of months.  They both look very good but both are coming off infections that have kept them indoors a lot.   Anyway it was good to renew acquaintances with them.
Then, since the gals were off playing Bridge, I stopped in to help Mark with some unpacking.  It will be interesting to see how everything gets placed in this unusual apartment with all its round walls and many nooks and crannies.
We stopped for supper at the Pollo Asadoro(?) next to the bridge at Las Americas and we were very pleased with the suppers.   For $5 I had the sea bass supper, with two monstrous fillets, and I couldn’t eat it all.   It was late and we tired of waiting for a bus to come along so we cabbed home for $3.
Sorry, I was busy all day and the camera never left my bag so no photos today.
That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al
Saturday July 20, 2013  update #518
OMG, I thought we would have a lazy day but then I found out that Fine Art America has got a new domain name, Pixels.com, so now my artworks automatically show up on 3 websites (http://al-bourassa.fineartamerica.com/,   http://al-bourassa.artistwebsites.com/, and now http://al-bourassa.pixels.com/).  This meant that I had to adjust my two personal websites to reflect these changes.   For those who don’t know and don’t care, they are http://saccc05.tripod.com/  and   http://boural.tripod.com/.
Yesterday we discovered that the URL’s for our Eleggant Hooks site are not working so I tried to call Network Solutions, our website hosts, but their phone kept cutting me off, no matter how many times I tried.  Emails to their support desk have remained unanswered so we are not very impressed with this situation while we lose sales….
I also had my camera set up to try to catch Tom Thumb for hours but he is avoiding me today for some reason.   I can hear him cheeping away but he is not visiting….
Of course Saturday means our visit to Joe’s Secret Garden for today’s BBQ offerings, yuummmeee!!   However, I had 2 glasses of wine, didn’t feel anything, but it definitely affected my performance when I went to work on the night’s photos.  I felt so stupid that I couldn’t remember my usual procedures for processing the photos from the camera that I do almost every day…   At 1am I gave up and went to bed.
That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al   Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/
Friday July 19, 2013  update #517
Happy 16th Birthday to my grandson Dawson!!!   Every one else can get off the road now…
Bella was off to the Weaving Store to do her charity crochet and knitting while I did my chores.
Shortly after noon I headed over to help Mark & Karen move boxes from the old apartment to the new condo.  This necessitated many trips up and down the elevators with small cart that was just ½ inch too narrow to be of major use.   This was my first time seeing their new place and it is impressive in its size and breadth.  They have many plans regarding renovations they would like to do to make it more their own style.  The deck, kitchen, dining and living rooms are monstrous, but the bedrooms not so much.  It will be fun to watch as the changes are made.
I meant to take photos but I never dragged the camera over to the new place, too busy holding onto boxes.  Luckily we had no accidents.   It is a good thing they have hired helpers for the furniture.
We were wondering where all the street vendors had disappeared, only a few of them have retreated into private doorways.  Apparently the city is having a major crackdown on illegal street vendors who haven't bought a licence and were becoming sidewalk hazards.  Bully for them!
That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al
Thursday July 18, 2013  update #516
Boy!  I hope this weather breaks soon and that we can see a little sunshine.   It is getting bad when I look forward to doing the dishes just to warm up my hands.
Really nothing on tap today and the weather is dull so I contented myself with doing the chores, uploading photos for sale, then working on a few more Pase Del Nino photos for you.  I can see that I am getting close to ½ way through those pictures so I have to keep at it or I won’t be done by the time this Christmas rolls around.
Bella is enjoying her Thursday day of rest before we both have appointments for tomorrow.
Oh, and a chopper cruised around overhead so I snapped  few shots and goofed around making a collage in Picasa
Wednesday July 17, 2013  update #515
I awoke early again with my mind rolling over some rebuttal arguments to a new proposal from our Coopera investors group.  I don’t want to get into specifics on this blog but I certainly felt they were taking some very wrong approaches that would harm us even more in the long run.  My position is if the Government is giving back 100% of funds to 98% of the account-holders in the Credit Union, then we should be insisting on the same treatment.  Nothing more, nothing less.
There is no firm information whether the balance of the businesses are being liquidated or not, at least not yet apparently, but if they do liquidate, we could then have the option of buying back those businesses and keeping the workers and farmers, etc...  It is a noble idea, but we need to have our money to do such a thing.   It took me all morning to formulate my thoughts into a coherent proposal for sending.
Bella was off to Bridge Club and I received the initial proposal and menu offerings from Villa San Carlos.  I must have attended different meeting because the menu was quite a bit different than what we were proposing yesterday.  That took more time to go through the proposal carefully and confer with my colleague.
Then I received a synopsis of the Hearts Of Gold meeting yesterday and again I thought I had been to a different meeting.  At least the many changes were seemingly all positive in this case.
I then went down to read my Dan Brown book and soon got the sinking feeling that I had read it before.  I was nodding off because I was so mentally exhausted that I conked out with the Boys for a while.
I took the #16 to meet the gang after Bridge for Chinese food at the Chifa Hillman.  This bus driver was skipping stops, not letting people off, and making detours, so he was getting most people quite upset.
The Chinese food is actually very good except they made a serious mistake and put shrimp in one dish when instructed not to.  Having a dead patron over such an error wouldn’t do much for their reputation.  Bella decided it wasn’t worth the fuss, she just didn’t have any of that dish.  We certainly had enough food to go around.
The return bus ride on the #16 was better but they are still detouring before Solano.  It took quite  while before the bus stop announcing system got back on the right sequence.
It was a dreary dull day again today and I was too busy to dig the camera out, so please enjoy more Pase Del Nino photos.
That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al   Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/
Tuesday July 16, 2013  update #514
I was up early, with many things on the go today.   I actually finished my chores about 9am and had another catnap before getting ready for my day’s odyssey.
I finally got to sneak over to the Book Exchange at the Windhorse café and swapped my Clancy book for a hardcover Dan Brown that I haven’t read yet.
The weather was quite iffy all day today, spitting most of the time and yet I refused to put on a jacket.   Many Ecuadorians were in quilted jackets and I saw one young boy sporting ski pants.
I hopped the #19 out to San Joaquin to go “register” our money documents at Coopera.   I timed it pretty good so I had a chance to talk to our old bank manager Juan.  He admitted to being caught by surprise just like we were, because even his parents are large investors in Coopera and are in the same boat as us.   There is still talk that us larger investors are going to take the hit for Coopera’s losses.   However, if they have paid out 98% of the investors in total, how can they deny us 2% of the same benefit??  It makes no sense.
Some investors think they can buy the Coopera assets for about 20% of our total owed, run the businesses and get the other 80% over an unspecified period of time.  Bella seems to think this is workable but I don’t see it.
I caught the #19 back downtown and had the almuerzo lunch at the LongStreet Café.  The lady has increased her price to $2.  I was hoping to catch the jets flying overhead around that time but the wind was coming from the west so the planes were approaching from the other end.
There was quite an impressive picture that I shared on Facebook showing the 5 mile high ash plume from Tungurahua.   So far this has not affected air travel too much.
Next was a meeting at Hearts Of Gold to help formulate criteria for persons or organizations requesting donations.  I sat in on this meeting and provided some input from things I had found online.  This data was then used as the benchmark for updating to HoG’s needs.   Onward and upward.
Then Gayle and I headed over to Villa San Carlos to discuss using their venue for the HoG Christmas Gala.  The event was held at Joe’s Secret Garden last year but that venue is just too small to accommodate us this year.  VSC can handle up to 250 people, with side rooms available, and room for a band and to dance.   We discussed the menu and bar selections and think we have a pretty nice package to present to the group for approval.  Tentatively mark your calendars for Friday December 6th for a rocking good time.
That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al
My only shot today, looking south from the LongStreet Cafe.
Monday July 15, 2013  update #513
I awoke very early with my mind rolling about with many questions about the Coopera fiasco.  I then spent about 4 hours composing an email containing few thoughts for the lawyer of our coalition.  News is spreading that the larger investors are the ones that will get screwed, all the smaller investors will have received 100% of their money.   Chances are the smaller investors are 95% Ecuadorian and 50% of the larger investors are expats.  This thing has stunk from the beginning.
I also notified Hearts Of Gold about a very valuable contact I made on Saturday at Joe's Secret Garden.  They are very excited to receive an offer of help from someone so experienced with non-profit organizations.
Bella was off for groceries and reports that the Coopera shelves are thinning, and they had no fish, but lots of meat and chicken.  Nothing can run a business into the ground like government intervention.
I watched the movie “Michael” again for a little levity to brighten my mood this afternoon then I came up and put my camera to work.   I had watched and saw that Tom Thumb was liking the new nectar on the windowsill and he was visiting every 15 minutes or so.
I set up the new camera and lens on the tripod and manually focused for where I expected to catch my quarry, hovering above my feeder.  Then I tried out my new remotes but actually had trouble with both so I read the instructions for the wired one.  It said I could remove the batteries and it would work just like a shutter release… Bonus!!   That is all I wanted it to do anyway…
I took about 35 pictures and have weeded those down to today’s offerings.
That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al   Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/
Sunday July 14, 2013  update #512
Happy Birthday to my lovely sister Yvette!!
Bella was off to the Bridge Club this morning while I began the 8-hour processing of my photos from yesterday.  I took a lot of time on these because I thought they were worth it.  I sure love that new lens!
My only interruption was when Walter stopped by to collect the few extra items I brought back from Canada that belong to the Sony HX1 he bought from me.  Walter’s school is closed so he would like to take me along some morning to his wife’s farm near another entrance to the Cajas.  He would like to go early enough to catch a sunrise some day.  I am game for that for sure.
Once I get this Blog off, a movie will definitely be in order.
Saturday July 13, 2013  update #511
I met my little buddy Juan in El Centro before 11am and we managed to just squeeze in before they closed to get up to the top of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral to take a few shots.  There was another large group of Ecuadorians up there, born and raised in Ecuador, but now living in New York, and just here visiting.  Being up there with the new camera and lens was exhilarating.
It was also great to get some shots of the pan flute players and the mime buskers and the street artists.   Gotta love this town.
We then wound our way south then east to the Banco Central Museum where they don’t allow photographs.  Nothing much was new in there so we went down to the Pumapungo Inca ruins and the aviary.   It was very strange that there were no llamas in evidence anywhere.  The peacock male still hasn’t regained his tail feathers either.  We had a Belgian waffle lunch before heading over to El Vergel for a few shots before I had to head home.   Note that I will upload these photos tomorrow.
I had to get hurriedly cleaned up to try to make an appearance at Rommie & Charles’ place for a meet n greet for their friends Bob & Cathy who will be moving to Cuenca to live very soon.  It turns out that Bob is another photographer so we had quite a chat.   As I was leaving there was a hummingbird posing for me near the entrance so I caught a couple of shots of him.
Then, being Saturday, my next duty was to head to Joe’s Secret Garden and do my thing for Greek night.  Again we met some very nice new people and made some valuable contacts.  One of our tablemates at supper could turn out to be a valuable asset for Hearts Of Gold….
That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al   Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/
Friday July 12, 2013  update #510
Happy 41st Birthday to my lovely daughter Jill!!
I am beginning to get bored and need to explore further out to maintain my interest here.  Visiting most of downtown is getting old hat and general exploring without money is not much fun.
Bella was off to the Weaving Store, part of her Friday routine so I decided to take the #13 milk run to Mall De Rio, about an hour ride each way.   I hadn’t been there in months so I hoped something would be happening there to pique my interest.
The Mall is extremely modern and you would have trouble believing you weren’t in North America, especially staring at Burger King and KFC in the Food Court.  The new Lone Ranger movie is playing here, amongst others, and I was tempted until I saw that it was being shown in Spanish.   I am pretty sure they have English subtitles but I am sure I will be able to buy the DVD real soon for $1.50.
The stores carry just about anything a person could be looking for, except maybe lumber. There are even motorcycles, quads and vehicles for sale here.  They had 3 pretty ladies looking after the Ford store, not a male in sight…
I wanted to leave but a rainshower forced me back in for another ½ hour.
I suppose the most fun is watching kids partake in the bungee leaping.  The kids I watched today were too light to be doing their own liftoff from the lower trampolines so the fellow was helping them on every descent.  It is hard to resist the kids squeals of laughter.
After the 1 hour bus ride back we got a nice short downpour so everything smells nice and fresh again.
That was the day's excitement,   Cheers, Al   Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/
Thursday July 11, 2013  update #509
Bella was having one of her few rest days at home, kicking back and playing online bridge with friends and foes.
I again had a great sleep and got up late so hurriedly did my chores and uploads.   I was determined to check out a possible venue for the Hearts Of Gold December Gala, the Villa San Carlos.  I mentioned this to Bella and she reminded me that they were holding the Happy Dogs spay & neuter fundraiser there this evening.    I decided to head out anyway.
First, I walked right past it… several blocks then asked directions and came right back.  Good grief, it is the second building on Remigio Tamariz, just behind the Mormon Church, and down from the Primax gas station.  Of course there is nobody around during Ecuadorian lunchtime so I was told to come back at 3pm.
So I decided to wander over to Hearts Of Gold but again, nobody was around, nor expected to be around all day.  Okay, I decided to check in at the Banco Del Pacifico across the street to see what their requirements were to open an account.  Luckily one lady spoke about as much English as I did Spanish so we got along well.  Other than a minimum of $200 to open an account, they seem to want more paperwork than Banco Pichincha, and their interest rates on a $30,000 CD was only quoted at 5.5%.  They want 3 letters of reference and utility bills for the prior 2 months, amongst colour copies of Cedulas, etc.   They do provide International Visa cards but I don’t know how many hoops I need to jump through for that.   I also intend to check the Banco Del Austro near here as I am told the lady Manager speaks good English and is amenable to Gringos.
Then I just bought a new black marker at Papeleria Monsalves so that didn’t kill much time.  I headed back to Vila San Carlos and took some photos then settled down in the lobby to await the American owner and his Ecuadorian wife.
Lo and behold, the door opens and Gayle from Hearts Of Gold comes in!  She said she has already been checking out the place and had shown it off to the HoG brass too!   Great minds think alike.  So we put our heads together a bit and she will make an appointment with the owners for next week.  The owners did show up at 3pm as promised so we only spoke briefly because they had their hands full with the fundraiser starting at 5pm.   Other than some pretty sizeable load-bearing posts causing minor obstructions to sight lines, the place is awesome, well-situated, and has parking.  They can seat over 200 and easily accommodate a band and a dance floor. They also have separate rooms available for things like a silent auction, beautiful reception area and even outside space for those dreaded smokers.   I think it is a winner….
The roadwork is now in full swing on both sides of Solano so we hope this is all completed long before our Gala is to take place.
Wednesday July 10, 2013  update #508
Had a really good sleep and wanted to get out earlier today but the weather wasn’t cooperating, and it didn’t really get any warmer until after sundown.  Go figure.   It was really chilly all day, and a slight breeze didn’t help.  If it was this weather in the dead of winter in Canada we’d probably be outside in t-shirts, but once you get so acclimatized to the consistent warm weather, even a slight drop feels really cool.
Bella was off to her Bridge Club today and she said it was really frigid in there too.
I contented myself with doing many chores, working on more photos and uploading some for sale.
I got myself into two layers of clothing from head to foot before heading out to meet the gang for burgers at the Chill Grill.
Our cab driver on the way back seemed almost surprised that we were Canadians and not Americans and he even demonstrated that he knew a few phrases in French, too funny.  He is dreaming of going to New York to work and to visit Canada.
I am posting a couple of shots today to show what a little backwater place we live in.
Tuesday July 9, 2013  update #507
Bella was off to the Book Exchange and to do shopping chores while I just looked at the rain and stayed inside.
I have managed to kill just about every plant we have so I started work on reviving them.  We have been saving eggshells for this purpose plus I do have some plant fertilizer that I am probably using wrong.  Anyway I crushed the eggshells and mixed them into the top layer of the dirt along with dead leaves, etc.  They will get a watering tomorrow on their usual schedule.
The Internet had been really slow and bad today, unusually really bad, so I struggled to upload works for sale and finally gave up.  I finished my Tom Clancy book and gave it to Bella but she didn’t have another similar book for me to start, so I will have to wait.
After supper we watched, 42, the story of Jackie Robinson breaking the colour barrier in baseball.  This is a very well made movie, except for Harrison Ford’s make-up, so we highly recommend it.
I just finished uploading my final 2 photos to FAA for sale so I am thankful that it finally worked.
I did some more work on some photos from the Pase Del Nino on Christmas Eve so I hope you enjoy them.
Monday July 8, 2013  update #506
Darn it, I was awake again before 2am and finally gave up and got to work on the previous day’s photos.  I was pleasantly shocked that I could salvage most of the hummingbird shots and make them somewhat presentable.  If it wasn’t for shooting in RAW format and using PhotoShop with techniques I have learned, almost all those shots would have been trashed.  I even managed to upload one for sale later.
About 7:30am my eyes were closing so I laid down for another couple of hours.  I guess that is one of the benefits of being retired, we can listen to our body clocks and not worry about other things not getting done by a certain time.
I will try to get out a little later for a short walk and maybe pick up a few more movies….
Sunday July 7, 2013  update #505
I wasn’t very energetic today as I struggle with sleep again.    I guess I get enough sleep per day but for now it is broken up in two or three segments.
Bella was off to Bridge Club today and was pleased to have 7 players, which bodes well if some of the regulars had also shown up.   She puts a lot of work into this so I hope it eventually becomes successful.
It was a good thing she reminded me to meet her afterwards for supper at Karen and Mark’s apartment because I probably would have forgotten in my sleepy state.
I took the #50 to downtown and got off to see almost deserted streets and most shops closed.  As this is the cooler season here apparently many of the locals head to lower elevations like the Yunguilla Valley to have warmer weekends.  I walked the rest of the way and was crossing a road and nearly got hit by a car that I never expected to veer in my direction.  Signal lights use is very uncommon here.
I arrived a few minutes early, just following Karen who had left the Bridge Club early.   I parked myself on their terrace with my camera to try to capture the hummingbirds they have coming to their feeder.  I had barely sat down when Bella also showed up early.   I managed to get several shots but wasn’t very hopeful of the outcome as most seemed more like silhouettes even as I tried to compensate with manual focus, etc.
We were joined by Nancy and Marv and Karen served us some delicious Moroccan dishes we had never heard of, and with ingredients we had probably never tried before.   Anyway, it was a culinary delight.
We got home quite late and I did not even bother with the photos but just crashed.   The photos and Blog could wait until tomorrow.
