Friday March 15/13  update #393
Pancho was keeping me awake so I got up before 5:30 and went out with the camera to see what the rising sun would offer.  I took many shots along the Yanuncay and kept a few for you to enjoy.  Every shot was taken on a manual setting, something we photographers sometimes do not always have the time to do, opting for an automatic setting.  Today’s cameras are so intelligent that we sometimes just get lazy and let the camera do all the work.
Shooting a time shot of 30 seconds smoothes out rough water and we also get much richer colour so I really love the deep blue that has come out on the pre-dawn shots of the river.
We had been asked to join Jim Mola and friends at Los Sabores De La Nonna on Avenida Solano for a “fiesta”, so we did.  This is a new restaurant, impossible to know about them unless someone tells you about them and gives you directions.  Basically they serve mostly shish-kebabs that are very tasty, although they do have things like lasagna on the menu, but apparently not tonight.  Folks were raving about the food previously so we were expecting great things, but… we got street meat shish-kebabs that we can get on any corner.   The company was great though and it was awesome to see many friends we hadn’t seen in a while.  Sorry about the quality of photos from there.  I was just using the small camera and didn’t bother with a lot of adjustments.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.  Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Thursday March 14/13 update #392
Bella was off to doll-making class again while I did the usual chores and uploads.   She is also close to setting up an afternoon bridge drop-in at the Cuenca Bridge Club which I hope she can pull off.  That will eliminate so much stress on her part and give her a much-needed outlet to play some competitive bridge without having to worry about who, or how many, will show up.
Then I was off for another meeting at Hearts Of Gold where we finalized a lot of the printing details for brochures and posters to promote HoG and the Silent Auction.  I got compliments on my admin work and the templates I have supplied for such things as Gift Certificates to ease the work of the volunteers.  We aim to please.
Our volunteers are an amazing group of bright people with no egos to soothe so it is working extremely well.  The ideas that are put forth are well thought out and helpful.  Most have begun their canvassing for items for the auction and some of the results are incredible.   It will be a fun event to attend for sure.
I have again sent out an email to all my contacts in Ecuador asking for their help in our HoG endeavors.  I am certainly hoping for a better response from this email than the complete dead silence received from the first one.
Sorry, no photos today.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.

Wednesday March 13/13  update #391
Bella was off at 6am to spend the whole day at the Visa Office.   That is not a process for the impatient.  She barely made it home in time for supper at 6pm.  She has to complete about 3 more minor items and sit through at least another day there in the line-up.
I did my usual chores which always take until past lunchtime then I forced myself to get outside.  I climbed the hill to catch the #3 up to the San Sebastian area to grab a few shots.  I am still getting accustomed to the idiosyncrasies of the new camera, for instance which has kept the instruction to do a delayed shot from yesterday.  So I am not including the resulting shots of my shoes as I tried to figure it out.
It is almost a given that there are threatening skies every time I visit this area, but it never rains…  Besides the gorgeous park and the white church, it is adjacent to the Museum of Modern Art which had a large exhibition of an artist with the last name of Roman who must be tormented.  I could only bring myself to show you samples of some of his tamer and recognizable work.  I saved going into the Auditorium last and almost had a heart attack when I saw that all the huge parchment wall hangings were missing!  I went to ask the fellow at the desk what happened to those and he said something about “Espana” so I can only assume they had only been on temporary loan to us from Spain.
I always get a corner shot of San Sebastian right next to the umbrella of the shoe-shine man.  He looked at my dirty runners and offered to shine them for 50c, so why not??
Further down the road I checked at a couple of video shops and was finally rewarded in finding a copy of “Love Actually”, “Amor en Realidad” in Spanish, one of our all-time favourite movies.  It is set in England, a few days before Christmas, as it follows 8 intertwined couples played by an incredible cast.   We can’t wait to watch it again.
I also found a set of headphones with a 6m cord for hooking up to the TV for only $20 and it is functional, but doesn’t have a great range of volume.
I tried to call Mom around 4pm but missed her, and was shocked when she called me back at 5:40.  That is pretty darn good for someone who will be 97 in a couple of months!  I am glad that I will be able to make it there for her Birthday.
I had sent a complaining email to NetTalk about the crappy connections we have been having of late.  The people on the other end can’t hear us half of the time and I was getting fed up.  Yet my conversation with Mom was clear as a bell.   I wonder if that is because she initiated the call??   Hmmmm.

Tuesday March 12/13  update #390
Bella was off to doll class today while I did multiple uploads of photos.
Then we had another meeting of Hearts Of Gold again for planning the Silent Auction and Sale.  I delivered the Galapagos collage and had to take a group photo of the volunteers.    One of the volunteers reminds me so much of Jim Farrelly at my old office, it is scary.
The meeting centered on proofing and suggesting improvements to the literature we will be needing for requesting donations and for promoting the Foundation.
Tarek has done such a wonderful job on the prototypes that I hope he isn’t upset at the multitude of changes that were suggested.  Many of the suggestions were for more concise and bilingual work.  We can all get carried away with our verbiage, but six separate paragraphs trying to say what we do in six different ways was a bit overboard.   Our Mission says it succinctly enough.
Now I have to get to work and start doing the Bid Sheets for the many items that have been donated.   I will have to get it straight in my head how I will want to number the items so the bigger ticket items are spread around, and we also want to colour-code them so we can close off items in stages, saving the bigger items for the end.   I also have to re-do the Gift Certificate templates, etc so I have to put on my designing hat so everything will be ready for another meeting on Thursday.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Monday March 11/13  update #389
My first chore of the day was to get a haircut.  Bella had found a real reasonable hairdresser just a few blocks away that gave haircuts for $1.50.  Luckily she was open today and I arrived just as she was finishing another client.  This lady is fast, like the $15 haircuts at home that take 10 minutes, and she is as good as Bella said she was.   But she doesn’t do manicures or pedicures….
Bella was doing her Monday grocery chores as I tried to catch a catnap because Pancho kept me awake all night.
I had an appointment to renew our house insurance which is decidedly different than in Canada.  I went in to see Cristina Alvarado at Seguralmeida on Roberto Crespo.  We did a quick review and decided to leave everything as is for another year.  Insurance is VERY different here than in Canada or the US.   They feel there is a larger burglary risk here so their rates are really quite high.  I keep pushing them to allow more discounts like they do in North America as an incentive to keep their good clients.  The homes are concrete or solid brick so fire isn’t much of an issue, but they easily allow earthquake or flood insurance, again very different.  I know we are underinsured, but at least we are insured for disaster and are probably the only insured home for many blocks, as Ecuadorians basically self-insure.
I was waiting for the #16 to return home and was surprised when it came from behind me so I was waving away, at the bus stop, and the buggar just drove on by.    Luckily the next one was only about 5 minutes behind him.   Welcome to Ecuador.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Sunday March 10/13  update #388
I tried to sleep in, but to no avail.  There was a procession of those folks in the purple gowns again today and they are quite noisy.  Bella told me that this was the culmination of a religious retreat or something.  Anyway it is quite a spectacle as they pass by our home.
I wanted to add my seal to the collage for the Hearts Of Gold and I was determined to try a collage of my own.    I gathered several Cuenca Kids photos and went into PrintShop to try to find a ready-made collage format but they were really restricted so I forged ahead and manually made one myself.   After several hours I finally had things lined up so I printed an A4 version on glossy paper.   Then I applied my seal and ran it through the laminator 4 times.   Now I have a nice placemat, lol.  It really needs to be printed much larger to be effective so I am not sure what I will do now.   At least the hard work is done.
Bella was off to play bridge at Joe’s and then we are meeting at Mark and Karen’s for a feast of Black Angus beef.   They had ordered some of this great beef from a local man and were super pleased with the product so we got to sample some of it.
It might not be Alberta beef but it was a close second!  Mark made some mashed potatoes with sour cream, chives and bacon, just like a baked potato and I filled my face.  Lemon squares for dessert topped off the evening.
We got to enjoy the African motif they have in their apartment, mostly from their time spent teaching in Egypt.   We were also rolling in the aisles recounting many pet stories from our past
Our 55ish cab driver asked if it was OK to stop to pick up his wife on the way so she could enjoy the ride.  We just laughed and said OK.  She was waiting on the street in a coat and scarf, with one curler in her bangs.   Only in Ecuador you say??

Saturday March 9/13  update #387
I had to stick around to process another 45 photos from yesterday and that takes a long time.   So check for a second batch of photos.   They include more from the Old Cathedral, a harpist, the Justice building and a few more candids.
Today is a rest and catch-up day for Bella while I have my usual Saturday job at Joe’s Secret Garden.   The meal is Arabic tonight so it was an experience.  Our favorites are still the Fried Chicken and the BBQ nights by far.  Mark and Karen came dressed in Arabic fashion, having lived in Egypt and all that, they had the attire.  It is funny that 2 Canadians came dressed as Arabs while the two Arabs, Youssef and Tarek stayed with their Western dress.   Anyway it was a fun night and a good time was had by all.

Friday March 8/13  update #386
Happy Birthday Bettye.
I was off and running early just to get downtown and take some photos because I agreed to be back in time for Rosa to do the housecleaning.
I managed to get inside San Alfonso church, the City Hall, the Provincial building, the Old Cathedral, then the Justice building followed by the Civic Centre next to Parque Calderon.   I have taken many shots of things I have taken before, but wanted to see what kind of results I would get with the new Canon camera.   There were many beautiful Ecuadorian artworks and statues, and I got a couple of candids as well. I do hope you like the results.
There are too many photos so I only got through less than ½ of them so far so you’ll just have to see the rest tomorrow.
Today is Women’s Day in Ecuador and there was a celebration about to commence in the Civic Centre but I didn’t have time to stick around.   A video store had a couple of movies that caught my eye so our collection has grown by another eight today.
Bella was off to the weaving store then to meet the lady who is going to translate her documents to enable her to get her own separate Residency permit here in Ecuador.
We went out to La Vina for pizza for supper and enjoyed that immensely.   We ran into a ferellow that lived in the county of Strathcona near Edmonton, his sister and their friends from Montana.  Then at an adjoining table there was a couple with 2 kids, he was from France and she was from Quebec.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Thursday March 7/13  update #385
Bella was off early again (do I know this woman??) with a friend to meet with the “Doll Lady” who makes spectacular costumed dolls made out of pantyhose, nylons, etc.   Over the years we have seen some amazing examples of such art so Bella was interested in learning another craft, naturally.
I did my thing then went to meet Jay at the Fuji store.  I thought he was late, most unusual for Jay, so I took a few shots of the pigeons and the church in Santo Domingo Square.  I found Jay in a neighboring store and we went into Fuji.  Jay had a problem getting the emails I had sent him with the updated versions of the old photographs he had given me.   See my earlier post about Hockey photos.  He wanted 40 x 50cm enlargements made of the Cournoyer and Lafleur versions, and he chose the sepia version of his Dad’s hockey picture.  I knew he would choose that one.  I love that shot.
He had brought along the completed collage for donation to the Hearts Of Gold Foundation Silent Auction so we came home to frame it.   On the way, we stopped in a video store and picked up the movie “Argo”.
We got home and had lunch, them cleaned the new frame and installed the collage.  It looks great!
Then we sat down to watch Argo and enjoyed that very much.
Bella soon came home followed by Oswaldo as they continued to work on his Canada Pension application.  Bella had done much research into the problem of applying from out-of-country, hoping that Canada Pension has all the information required on everyone.  We assumed that they would have the information from every paycheque where CPP is deducted but apparently not…  It seems they can now play stupid and force us to prove, yes, prove, when you entered and exited the country and when you worked and contributed…  I am glad that we never encountered any such problems when we applied, although I may be in the distinct minority where I have every income tax filing since day 1.   They were honestly hoping that CPP would tell them how long Oswaldo had worked in Canada but it now appears that Oswaldo is going to go to Canada and talk to them in person.   He is planning to return to Canada to work for a couple of years anyway.   Don’t we just love government bureaucracy!
Bella is going to be applying for her own separate Visa, in case something happens to me, so some of her documents have to be translated by an approved translator.
Jay had some of Bella’s new bread, and a chocolate éclair so he was just raving about Bella’s culinary expertise.
Donations are starting to come in for the HoG Silent Auction so I will be getting busier for the next few weeks.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Wednesday March 6/13  update #384
Bella was all prepped to host some serious bridge players today and they played for 2.5 hours.
I got an email from one of the founders of the Hearts Of Gold Foundation asking if I could do a Blog entry about their upcoming “Pay It Forward” Silent Auction and Sale event on April 13th.   Plus she wanted some photos of donated items to accompany the article. ….  No pressure, but maybe by today or tomorrow….  So I started scribbling.
After a few phone calls I made it to the HoG office at 2:30, supplied the Blog item, donated a painting, and took photos of a few necklaces that also have been donated.
While I was there we also caught the last Volunteer to get his photo taken too.
I rushed home and worked on the photos and had them back to the Brass by 5:30.  I also received an email that the Blog item has been posted on their new, fabulous website at heartsofgoldfoundation.org so please have a look at it and subscribe if you can.
Bella had a visit from Oswaldo to have her explain some responses he had received from Canada Pension.
I continue to work on scheduling of duties and the paperwork we will need for the April 13th HoG Auction.   There are many minute details to get done and we are still looking for many more donations.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Tuesday March 5/13  update #383
Bella was off early to teach a crochet class and then she had to see if some registered documents were being saved for her at the main Post Office or not.  We had them sent to a friend’s PO Box only to find out they have now cancelled it, so we were unsure if our documents would be lost forever.  A big sigh of relief to find the documents were indeed being held.
These documents are necessary for Bella to apply for her own residency as opposed to being a dependent on my visa.  Since there are no laws governing the situation if I should suddenly get hit by the big red bus, it is safer for Bella to get her own full residency approved.  She tried to get that process started today, even to just get one question answered, but they tell her she must come only in the mornings (they don’t know that Bella isn’t a morning person…).
I did my usual chores and uploading but had a problem with my FAA photos that wouldn’t upload.  Then I rushed to get ideas ready for the Hearts Of Gold meeting this afternoon.  I was shocked to see about 5 new faces at our meeting but soon found that some of these new volunteers will be a great asset to HoG.  My duty is to coordinate efforts and donations and paperwork.   Oh, and I had to take more photos of the new volunteers for their Volunteer badges that Tarek has done such a great job on.   Many more great ideas were brought forth and many more valuable contacts uncovered.
When I arrived home I had to work on the photos for Tarek first.   Then I had to send out 3 templates for our volunteers to use for donations and Gift Certificates.
Sorry, I had no time for any other photos today.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Monday March 4/13  update #382
Neither of us are feeling completely up-to-snuff yet but the chores still need to be done and we have to fight our way through it all.
Bella went out for a haircut and then got some more groceries.  She spreads out her grocery purchases over 3 days at 3 different locations, Coopera, Coral and Super Maxi.
I uploaded more works for sale again today then was determined to head down near the Escalinata to see if there was any action down there.  Going by that area on the bus on both Saturday and Sunday it appeared there was a bunch of tents being set up for some event, so it needed checking out.  Oh well, they must have been putting them up on Saturday and taking them down on Sunday because the place was bare of anything exciting.
I had to content myself with getting a few photos with the new camera of Todos Santos, the Broken Bridge, some Inca ruins and a Parrot.
I tried to get into the Pumapungo ruins but the security guard was waving everyone away for some reason.  Rain was threatening so I headed for the nearest bus stop.  The first bus that pulled up had drawn the ire of a motorcycle cop and many patrons on the bus were giving their two cents worth to the cop too.  This was naturally holding up a lane of traffic so the policeman was not too popular with anyone.   Finally my bus showed up and I managed to make it home safely.

Sunday March 3/13  update #381
I didn’t have a very good night so I just got up and uploaded more works for sale.
Bella was off for banking and groceries, then bridge at Joe’s.   She is getting very frustrated and needs to find a real competitive situation soon.
I slipped up to Jay’s place, nice apartment on Escandon, to check out the collage he is working on for us as a collaboration for the Hearts Of Gold Silent Auction on the 13th.  He has done a great job and I can’t wait to see the final result when everything is glued down and then framed.
Jay showed me many of his prior collages, many autographed by our childhood hockey heroes.   He has put a lot of work into those, without benefit of any computers.   Wayne, Mario, Gordie, Bobby, Paul, Tim, and many others he has done over the years.
Then he showed me several old personal photographs and he asked if there was any way he could get some decent enlargements off them if he dragged them to the Fuji store.  I told him most of them would have to be scanned, cleaned up and adjusted severely before they could produce anything decent.  I offered to experiment on a few, so he gave me one with Guy LaFleur (The Flower), and two with Yvon Cournoyer (The Roadrunner), plus a great old championship photo of the Sons Of Ireland featuring his father.  That last photo is easily my favourite as I love the old black and whites.  Jay has given me permission to share the results with you.   I have not only taken a small original and made it possible to get a larger enlargement, but I have had to clean up a lot of fading, flash glare, folds, dust and scratches, but I am not displeased with the results.  Sometimes there is only so much you can do with a small, damaged original.
Bella made it home and we went out to KFC for a long overdue treat.   She had also brought home some leftover cinnamon buns from Joe’s for dessert, yummmmy!
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Saturday March 2/13  update #380
Didn’t do much today, just the usual computer stuff and tried to nap to catch up on my recovery since there is virtually no more stuffiness or cough left.
Bella went to the weaving store to prepare kits for a crochet class she is going to be teaching.
Then we were off to Joe’s Secret Garden for a Barbeque supper.  The boys were busy making cinnamon buns for dessert and were cursing all the work involved.   As a result the supper was very late but nobody seemed to mind too terribly much.  It was nice to catch up with Chris and Bettye who we hadn’t seen in ages and with many other friends.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Friday March 1/13  update #379
My gosh, after a fitful night of coughing and hopefully expelling the remnants of my cold I was up at 7:30 and did my usual computer chores, and uploaded more photos for sale.   I can tell I am feeling over the hump but totally exhausted so I crashed again at 11 and never saw the clock again until 2pm.  Now I feel better!
This morning was foggy, blustery and rainy so I thought I would try a few shots from the window of raindrops on the wires, and then some falling from the roof.   After my enforced nap I again tried my hand at processing from RAW and learned a few more techniques along the way.   I know that will be a never-ending process of learning.
I don’t believe I mentioned before that I have ordered an EF75-300 USM zoom with filters off of eBay so I am really looking forward to seeing this new lens when I get back to Canada in 2 months.  Along with the new remote control I should then be in league with the big boys and ready to rock and roll photography-wise.   I am so looking forward to getting this new equipment.
Bella slipped out to play bridge today and I hope that makes her a happy camper as well.   I believe the drugs were working well fer her as well since I have heard no coughing from her quarters for some time.
I think a good movie, or two, is in order for tonight.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Thursday February 28/13  update #378
Goodbye February!
I took my drugs and hit the sack early and actually got some sleep as I could feel their effect working.  I was skeptical at getting 6 pills and 6 packets of powder to be mixed with water and drank individually with each pills every 2 hours.  We are enjoying the knowledge and latitude that the local Pharmacists have here in dispensing drugs that actually work.
Bella is even worse than me today so she went off to the Pharmacist to duplicate my drugs too.
I had asked Jay to come over because his hobby is making collages so I figured we could collaborate on a donation to the Hearts Of Gold Silent Auction coming up April 13.  I dug up several Galapapgos photos and we went through them and culled them to 16 photos that he felt he could work with.
Then the two of us caught the bus to the Fuji store where I showed Jay the suggested frame and he agreed, so we got the photos printed for him to work with.  He was really impressed with the helpfulness of the Fuji staff.  Then we slipped down to Papeleria Monsalves so he could get a few supplies to do his hobby work.
Then I was late to get to Jon & Barbie’s new place behind Joe’s Secret Garden.  They have this gorgeous house, with additional quarters in the front, so they are going to start a B+B in the main home.  This is truly a beautiful home and I know they will do a good job of it as they are a really great couple.   I was asked to take some photos for them to post on a worldwide B+B site.  Hopefully I’ll get the link later.
If you are interested in checking out their B+B, see the photos on the Souvenir blog, or call their cell at 099-985-5562.

Wednesday February 27/13  update #377
After many months of experimentation, Bella may have finally perfected the art of bread-making at this altitude!  In spite of running out of gas mid-way in the baking process, the resulting loaves were perfect.
I woke very early and was able to catch the gas man on his first pass-by this morning.   Usually you can set your clock at 6:30am for his honking but naturally he was late this morning, just because I was waiting for him.
I finally got back to uploading some more photos for sale.   I have such a backlog, at least 500 works, and that is not counting really anything meaningful since Xmas Eve.  Between the Pase Del Nino and the Galapagos I could easily have another 500 ready to go.   I don’t know how to solve this dilemma.  I need to partner with a marketing genius I think.
I am still fighting this sinus cold but I feel 10 times better physically today.   I actually feel that I am winning the struggle to get my weight and physical condition back on track.  I also soaked up some natural Vitamin C on the terrace to help combat this stubborn cold.   Then I broke down and went to the Pharmacy.
We had another meeting at the Hearts Of Gold to come up with a Mission Statement today and it was very productive.  We need a Statement to be included in a brochure for volunteers to canvass for our upcoming Silent Auction.
I was also asked to take photos of all the volunteers so they can make name tags, etc, so we will all look official.  We got them all except for one, who I will get later.
I got home to find Bella in a foul mood after finding out she has now lost her Ecuadorian bridge partner.   The poor girl has given so much to improve the game here that she is feeling totally unappreciated, and unable to play competitively as often as she would like.  It seems that she is going to resort to online bridge games against players worldwide to get her competitive juices flowing.   I really hope that works for her.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Tuesday February 26/13  update #376
Bella was cooking up a storm today, so much so that she emptied another of the propane tanks so she had to switch tanks with the hot water.
I started researching for a zoom lens to complement the lens I have which is woefully inadequate in the field.  I can find a decent lens for about $200, but now need to find a way to raise the $200.
I slipped downtown to see if the Canon dealer here had any lenses, and he does have a few, but they are pricey compared to online.
I then stopped at the Fuji store to check out their prices for photo prints and they are quite reasonable.  I have a few things in mind that will require some printing.
We had another Hearts Of Gold Foundation meeting today at 2:30 and it was very productive.   We had some new volunteers that will contribute greatly to the organization of the next fundraiser.  Sheryle Verkley joined us as one of the founders of HoG and she is great to organize and focus the team.  I volunteered to be the Admin person for the silent auction, which I assume means I am the collator of all the information, etc.   It will be an interesting few weeks.
I am still playing with the new camera and its functions and trying to get a rhythm in the RAW processing.   I have a lot to learn yet.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Monday February 25/13  update #375
I had just a horrible night, hardly being able to lie down flat, with a cold setting in to the sinuses.  I somehow managed to get a couple of hours sleep before deciding to just seize the day and get moving.   In all my waking hours I had been fearfully formulating a strategy to take the next step in photography, to graduate to taking RAW photos.  I read the manual a few times and checked it out online and it was clearly a decision I had to make.  All the professionals shoot in RAW format because you have so many more layers of light and clour to play with.  I really had no idea what I was in for.
Monday is a grocery day for Bella so she was off and running.
I called up Paul Wolf, a professional and knowledgeable photographer who has been an immense help to me.  In the back of my mind I was hoping he was free to help me into this foray and surprisingly he was indeed available so we met near the Hospital Del Rio and began to just walk along the Yanuncay as he explained to me the benefits of RAW photography and what it would do for me.  I had my new Canon set to take both RAW and JPEG and we went over the settings I had chosen, which surprisingly, most met with Paul’s approval.
Paul and I do not always pick the best days for photo walks, because usually I ask him before I have even looked out the window.  Today was no exception, exceedingly cloudy, which makes for bad shots involving any sky.  The sun did try to show itself but those were very fleeting attempts that did us no good.
Not that we were trying to take any award-winning shots today, I just wanted to take a few reasonable shots in both formats to see what I would have to work with later.
With Paul’s help we managed to try different manual exposures to get some acceptable shots to play with.  About 1:15 my stomach was growling so we parted and I walked home, managing to get a few more floral shots on the way.  Lunch was a necessity as I competed with bella for kitchen space as she was making huge batches of muffins.
I took a chance on some of the things that Paul had told me and managed to not only download both formats, but I managed to get the RAW images to open in Adobe RAW, then PhotoShop.  After I had worked on only 3 photos I had to call Paul to thank him for all his help in opening up this whole new world for me.  The difference in the available data to work with is astounding, and the results completely amazing.  I just deleted all the JPEG images and concentrated on the RAW images alone.   Once processed, they are converted to JPEG images anyway, and 10 times superior to the JPEG coming from the camera’s processor.
I know the photos today might be laughable to a professional but they are giddily fantastic to me for a very first effort.  I hope you enjoy them.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Sunday February 24/13  update #374
I worked until 5am and then went back to bed until 10am.
The Blog photos for Feb 16 on Santa Cruz have been posted.
Next I set about preserving all my Galapagos photos to a DVD, just in case.  After much trial and error, I now have 3 copies and a DVD jacket made up.  I also printed a few choice shots to go on my Wall Of Fame.
Next on the agenda is to see if I can make a Zip File for emailing as I have never done that before.
Bella is off playing bridge so I am playing with all my photo resources here, now that I have finally almost finished with the Galapagos photos which are whittled down to only 408.  I am proud of myself.
There are so many things to do that I have not uploaded any photos for sale for over 2 weeks.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see these photos PLUS all new photos from last Saturday Feb 16 at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Today’s posted Feb 16 photos from the highlands of Santa Cruz Island in the GALAPAGOS include the giant tortoises in the wild.

Saturday February 23/13  update #373
I worked on the Feb 15 shots from Isla Isabela so I could get that Blog done before I headed to Joe’s.
Bella was off to play bridge this afternoon in the west end.   Her usual partner’s hip replacement operation was a success and she is looking forward to getting back to some real competitive play.
I knew something was wrong when I arrived at Joe’s Secret Garden only to find the place dark and locked up.  After buzzing twice Joe came out to explain that they were both sick and that the dinner was cancelled.  Apparently Joseph sent an email to everyone who had booked for the meal but neglected to remember me.  Oh well.  I called Bella and we met up for supper at a new Chinese Restaurant on Gran Columbia, right next to the Corazon De Jesus church.  Apparently it had been recommended by Joe and Joseph so we gave it a try and were pleasantly surprised with a really nice meal for a very reasonable price.  We’ll go back there for sure, especially for their deep-fried wontons.
I decided to hit the sack at 9:30 only to be up and working on this Blog at 1am.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see these photos PLUS all new photos from last Friday Feb 15 at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Today’s posted Feb 15 photos from the Isla Isabela include shore birds, marine iguanas, frigate birds, pelicans, beaches, and last but not least, the greaceful flamingoes.

Friday February 22/13  update #372
I was feverish to finish the Feb 14 photos so I could have a morning to myself so I worked on them until 2am.  Then it was toss and turn until 7:15 when I needed a coffee to get me going.
I met Jay at Immaculate Conception with the intention of trying to see the crypt, as I can never remember the hours it is open.  We got there just before the early 9am closing and the nun let us in.  I told her we wouldn’t be much longer than 10 minutes.  My main focus again was the beautiful sad seated angel statue at the far end.
We snapped a few shots inside the cathedral as I gave Jay a few tips on making interesting and pleasing photographs.
Outside I almost stepped on a huge beetle that looked like it was encased in wood.   We had never seen such a thing before and were quite fascinated.  The poor thing seemed to be entangled in a bunch of hair and feathers so we helped him get rid of most of his encumbrances.  We then went by the flower market, then the art market and finally the 10 de Agosto market.
I took many shots today but have culled most out.  I am getting more discerning about the photos I want to keep and only keep mediocre shots if they have a story to tell.  Frankly, I am so bleary-eyed from working on photos that I should take a break if I can.
Bella was out for more groceries today and was home in time for Rosa’s appointment to clean house.
Tonight we are off to the California Kitchen so Bella can have her fix of BBQ’d ribs.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see these photos PLUS all new photos from last Thursday Feb 14 at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Today’s posted Feb 14 photos from the Isla Isabela include baby sea lions, marine iguanas, birds, sharks, sea turtles, penguins, sunsets, and blue-footed boobies.  Yes Virginia, you heard right, blue-footed boobies!  If you haven’t seen boobies with blue feet, well you haven’t lived, so go to my blog for Feb 14.

Thursday February 21/13  update #371
A reminder to see the compilation of Galapagos videos at  http://youtu.be/XV94dg2LhHA
I woke up at 1:30 and finally just got up and started working on the Feb 13 photos at 3:30 for about 4 hours before crashing again for about 3 hours.  Then I was up again to work on the photos for another 2 hours.  It is time-consuming and keeps me in the house but it is something that needs to be done properly.
I learn some new technique every day and I am really proud of the new detailed work that is resulting from these efforts.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos from last Wednesday Feb 13 at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Today’s posted Feb 13 photos include an early morning walk to Las Grietas on a trail of inhospitable mud-covered lava rock.  This was not an easy walk, starting at Finch Bay.  The Las Grietas fjords are part of a volcanic fracture or fissure stretching from Estrada Point to the western end of Academy Bay and continuing several kilometers underground.  Here, sea water and rainwater mix, so the ecosystem is brackish sea-water.  Fish larvae, such as Parrot Fish, can grow these fissures and then remain trapped here until they grow to adulthood.
You arrive at Las Grietas suddenly, looking down at some steep wooden stairs into this narrow canyon spreading left and right.  The right side is narrow and overgrown.  The left side however is a treasure of brilliant green water with many fish in evidence.  It seems to be a favourite trek for people to swim and even jump from the cliffs.  It was disappointing to see garbage left behind by ignorant humans, and I hate to call them that, in such a pristine setting.  Even at only 8:30am the relentless sun and humidity had us dripping wet and anxious to cut our visit short.  On the way back we encountered a large group or two including Europeans and Ecuadorians.  Walking on the sharp rocks with many wet sections of red mud was treacherous and dangerous, yet old people in sandals trudged on.  When I saw a man carrying a boy of about 6 years old I wanted to reach out and smack the idiot.  One small mis-step and both of them would be severely injured.  Even duct tape can’t cure stupidity.  I know I have reported some of this earlier so I apologize.
Usually the mid-day means showering off the sweat and grime from the morning outing then enjoying the air-conditioning to work on the computer and have a nap.
The days and nights are also only 12 hours in the Galapagos, basically 6:30 to 6:30, so outings are designed to avoid the scorching times between 11am and 4pm essentially.  In the late afternoon I walked with my 2 cameras to the water taxi pier for Finch Bay and took many shots of the action nearby, boats, people, pelicans, frigate birds, crabs, and the fascinating Marine Iguanas.
When we went to town for the evening meal I ordered a salad with chicken, ham, mozza and egg.  It sounded interesting but I was unprepared for the dish that came, with almost no evidence of the paltry amount of lettuce buried underneath.  Ecuador, where everything is possible, but nothing is for sure.  (Love that motto).
Near the pier there was yet another political rally in the skateboard park for supporters and candidates of President Rafael Correa’s ruling party.  We now know that he was easily re-elected as the polls had suggested from the outset.  He is a bit of a lefty but he has done so much good for the country since he came to power that it is a popular outcome.
Today I am going to include an untouched photo of a Marine Iguana to show the difference in a processed artwork.  The unprocessed photo has just hints of the colour in the skin of these fascinating creatures, but they are definitely there.  Part of my processing generally includes darkening a photo to bring out the colours, then to saturate those colours a little, then add some vibrance, amongst burning and dodging and other requirements.  The results on the Iguanas caught me completely by surprise.  I knew the colours were there, in their skin, but how easily they “popped” was a shock.  I hope you are enjoying the results.

Again, to see the compilation of Galapagos videos at  http://youtu.be/XV94dg2LhHA
Bella is off to play in a charity Dominoes tournament today.  She doesn’t know much about dominoes but it is for a good cause, and she needs a break.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I continue to get up early to work on these Galapagos photos, over 7 hours so far but it is going well.  I hate to have to delete any photos but choices have to be made to keep the good ones, and the ones that contribute to the story.
Peso keeps bugging me to play so I will relent and feed him some treats.  Pancho visits me later in the day for his rubdown.
Nose to the grindstone, what can we say….
I suspected that I had fouled up my dates on the Souvenir blog and yup, I sure did!  They are now corrected.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all new photos from last Tuesday Feb 12 at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Tuesday February 19/13  update #369
Again, to see the compilation of Galapagos videos go to  http://youtu.be/XV94dg2LhHA
Bella got home late last night from playing bridge at the Cuenca Bridge Club with a temporary partner since her regular partner is going in for hip replacement surgery this morning.
It is tough to sleep when you know you have so much to get done in a day so I was up by 7:30 and plowed into more Galapagos photos from last Tuesday.   I had done many last night but still had a pile to do this morning.
I discovered something neat when processing my photos of the marine iguanas.  Most of the iguanas looked dark, or covered in sand, but occasionally we would see glimpses of colour peeking through.  As I saturated the colour for each iguana the colours just exploded out!   It seems as though these guys have a chameleon-type skin so they can blend in with their surroundings at will!   Anyway I hope you enjoy the photos just posted.
I had to go to Hearts Of Gold office this afternoon for a follow-up meeting to organize a spring fundraiser.  The date was chosen as Saturday April 13th following the big April 12 fiesta celebrations here.   We will be holding a silent auction and sale between 5pm and 8pm at the California Kitchen.  Now the work begins to find donated goods to be auctioned.   Upon arriving home I posted ads on 4 different Gringo sites requesting donations to jump start us in the right direction.   I have received the HoG logo from Emilie so I can begin work on the auction sheets.   Later we will probably have to do a door-to-door business canvas to get support.
Sad news to report that Grenville, the partner of Mike’s grandmother, had passed away last week after a bad year fighting multiple cancers.  Mike is the husband of Bella’s daughter Kim,   It has been a tough year for that family.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all photos from last Tuesday Feb 13 at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Monday February 18/13  update #368
Well we made it back from the Galapagos Islands late last night, too late to vote in the Ecuadorian general elections so we can await a fine for voting because it is mandatory here.  The outcome for President was never in doubt as the popular President Correa was easily re-elected.  We had no idea who to vote for Assemblymen anyway.
Exhausted and sticky, we unpacked and played with the Boys who were very happy to see us back home.  I did manage to get all my photos downloaded from my laptop direct to my external disk drive so I can begin the processing on those today.  I have already whittled them down to under 700 and will have to be harsh in making many further cuts.
I also downloaded a few movies that I had belatedly decided to take because still pictures can’t show everything.  I had hesitated to use the movie mode because that would eat up so much of my batteries but I did have back-ups and chargers so I managed to take a few.  At other locations it would have been just too inconvenient to do movies because of footing, being in a boat, or just having no time to do both.  The movies include marine iguanas, shore birds, crabs, giant tortoises, flamingos and the general beauty of Isla Isabela.
See the compilation of these videos at  http://youtu.be/XV94dg2LhHA
I think I have decided to try to process my photos and put up a few as I go along in my blogs so stay tuned.  I will see if it will let me backdate posts to the correct days, I don’t see why not, they’ll just be out of order.
We would highly recommend a trip to Isla Isabela in particular, because of the diversity of animals, plants, birds and fish.  Also the beaches are so very pristine and go on forever.  We apparently picked a good time to go to see the most lush period for the plant life and also hit mating season for most of the species here.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.
Please see all photos as I post them later at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Wednesday February 13/13 update  # 367
Even though we didn’t have to, both of us were awake shortly after 7am so we hurriedly got ready and headed out to find Las Grietas east of our location and past the beach where I swam.  We were warned to wear solid footwear and to take the walking sticks that are in the place here.  Both were very good advice for traversing very rough and coarse volcanic rock for about a kilometer.  It was slow going on the way there as it was quite unfamiliar and with wet mud in places.  We had to cross two small creeks by walking on just a few rocks so I was very concerned for Bella behind me,   I would forge a path but she would inevitably do her own thing anyway.   I sure didn’t want either of us to twist an ankle way out in this terrain.
Las Greitas is a series of huge fissures in the volcanic rock that connect with the ocean underground so you have two types of crystal clear emerald green water that is breathtaking.  Many people come here to snorkel or even jump from the cliffs.   The place is home to some very large fish and I heard mention of parrot fish somewhere.
The return trek was much faster because we were now familiar with the trail and smart enough to avoid any rocks with red slippery mud on them.  We had been there all alone in the building heat and met many people coming in as we were heading out.   We had to stop as a tour of Germans (they are everywhere here) then a tour of Ecuadorians went past.  Old grandmothers in sandals had us shaking our heads until we saw an idiot Ecuadorian carrying a young boy in his arms.  If that man lost his balance anywhere, they were both in for some major scrapes and bruises.  There seems to be no bounds to people’s stupidity.
Getting home around 9am was a relief as the relentless equatorial sun had me just soaked again and an immediate shower was again in order.
Then we both retired to a comfortable couch or hammock or rocking chair and relaxed a bit.  The finches and mockingbirds kept me company on the upper terrace.
Around 11am I decided to try to get some photos of the wildlife near our boat dock, where we catch the water taxi.  I loaded my feet with sun block and wore my sandals again, determined to stay as much as possible under the protection of the small gazebo.  I saw a sea lion swim by, but couldn’t get a decent shot.   I was hoping he was headed to sleep on the next dock but no such luck.  Crabs kept skittering up and down the rocks avoiding any human contact.  At the next dock we would have frigate birds come to dry their wings while perched there.  Pelicans would cruise to and from the roof of that dock too.
However it was the marine iguanas that put on an never-ending show as they would swim up, climb up the rocks, over the stone walls, find a shady pot to sit for a while.   I have some incredible close-ups from as close as a foot away.  Doing so meant that I would have to brave the direct sun again and again but I would do the same thing again in a heartbeat.  So what if I had to have yet another shower upon my return…
The other four people returned from their snorkeling trip late so we headed out for supper at 6.  Bella had pasta and I had a very unusual salad with meat, eggs and mozza on top.  They were setting up for a big political rally fiesta with music, videos, and lots of people in the reigning party’s colours.  Correa had this election won before the campaign even started, we have seen almost nothing from any other parties, .regardless of all the millionaires running against him.
We got an ice cream for dessert and were enjoying the festivities when we saw the other 4 just getting off the boat for supper.  They will be back in time to play another round of Mexican Train Dominoes (the only game they have) before we all hit the sack for another early rising.
Sorry, no blg for the next 3 days as we go to another island and not bringing the laptop.
That was today’s excitement.  Hugs to all.

Tuesday February 12/13 update  # 366
We were off by 7am to go the Darwin Center with a guide named Paul from England who has been a biologist here for 10 years.  His explanations of how plant and animal growth began on newly formed volcanic rock are nothing less than extraordinary.  The long and short of it is that seedlings were either airborne by the wind, carried by the sea, or carried by birds.  Birds would carry things either as mud on their legs and feathers or in their poop.  Darwin apparently planted the mud he collected off one finch and checked to find 16 or more different plant species had grown.
Mangroves float in the arid zones and grow everywhere reaching down with tentacles to start new trunks which are fed with water at high tide.  They even send up little snorkels to collect oxygen to survive..
Animals and plants that must survive in a harsh environment learn to adapt and form new species, such as the marine iguana which had to learn to swim to collect food underwater.
The highlight of the tour is to see the successful breeding program to save the giant turtles, which again have many species.  We saw them from the baby stage right up to the huge adults that may be hundreds of years old.  Turtles are probably the oldest example of adaptability because they initially grew their shells as a defense against carnivorous dinosaurs!  Yes, they pre-date the dinosaurs!
In June, their oldest turtle, Lonesome George sadly passed away.  The Center tried everything to get George to mate with females of his own species but they could not figure out his lack of interest.  Apparently he had major problems with his internal organs, no other reason.
His replacement is Diego, borrowed from the San Diego zoo.  Diego, along with four other males have been happily breeding and providing a lot of eggs for incubation.  This brought up another story of their earliest efforts producing only female offspring.  It turns out the incubation temperature will determine the sex off the baby, so they learned many new things in the process.
The most interesting turtle evolution is the saddleback turtle.  Because they had no predators on Galapagos they began to strain against the front of their shell so they could reach higher for plant matter.  Apparentlt they cab stretch up to 5 feet high now, and they expect them to increase the height substantially in the next few hundered years.
They work diligently to be sure that no outside species of plant or animal is brought to the Galapagos, hence the strict screening and then the spraying of our carry-on luggage.   I feel they should have a short course upon landing so everyone understands the importance of keeping this location pure unto itself.  There is a story of a German who tried to smuggle out 2 marine iguanas in his luggage because the reward is about $100,000 each.  I hope the idiot gets fined that much and is locked up for idiocy for many years.
Again I wish I could send you a lot of pictures but it just isn’t going to happen until much later.
I managed to find some nice sandals to wear instead of my runners in this heat, then we had a lovely lunch in town before taking the water taxi back across the bay.   Bella retired to her book again until she conked out for her afternoon nap.
I, on the other hand, grabbed a beach towel and beach umbrella and trekked off to Finch Bay, not far from here and joined the many families enjoying the sun and the sand and the water.   I had a good dip and could have easily just fallen asleep on my back in the salt water, no problem floating at all.   I must have as much hot air as a politician!  But the sun is close to being directly overhead at this time of year so it wouldn’t take long to be burnt to a crisp.  I had a good time in the water then retired under the umbrella for a while.    I toyed with the idea of going back in but the tide was coming in and getting within a foot of my towel so I packed up to leave.  The family next to me were taking Carnaval very seriously spray-foaming the kids and covering each other in some kind of blue paint.   I am not too certain that I enjoy their version of Carnaval!
We went out for a lovely supper at the same restaurant as Sunday night and enjoyed the antics of the pelicans and frigate birds on the boat ride in, while it was raining.  At the dock there was an artisan’s display of wood carving, starting with chain saws and the final results were breathtaking, mostly of turtles mating.
The others were eating leftovers at home and ate late so we had to wait for them to play Mexican Train dominoes again.  Bella was in the lead all night, losing on the last hand, just like I did the night previous.   Some of the rules they have thrown in there are very frustrating so a few of us will be glad for a respite from it.  The others are going snorkeling at Bartolome tomorrow so we can have a lazy day.  I note that my feet are close to being burnt already just from the short time I was at the beach, and in the water.   Gotta respect Mother Nature around here.
I am only able to post a couple of shots on my Facebook page but there is still now way to do the photo Blog.  Sorry again, but a few of the sgots today will be worth waiting for.
That was today’s excitement.  Hugs to all.

Monday February 11/13 update  # 365
Sorry, my mind was so muddled yesterday from lack of sleep and exhaustion that I was not as exuberant and descriptive as I could have been.  I crashed about 10:30 our time, but 9:30 here as there is a time change here, same as Central time.
We have a lot of tiny green Geckos in the building, only about 2 inches long.  They are so cute and harmless.
It is so warm and humid that we don’t put any clothes on until absolutely necessary.  Please do not send me any comments about your mental pictures…
We were up before 6am to go walking to Tortuga Bay.  We were lucky to fins a restaurant that could sell us some water and Gatorade at that hour.   Naturally we have to take the water taxi to the town, then get to the 2.5km walking path.  Along this path are huge cacti, the only ones that grow like trees and end up with a kind of bark when they are mature.  The foliage is dominated by finches and mockingbirds and the path itself is cobblestone.   Marg and I are fast walkers so we would trudge on up ahead then wait while Bella caught up.  Bella has only 2 walking speeds, slow and slower.
We could hear the breakers crashing long before we could see the beach.   We knew the beach would be magnificent from photos we had seen but nothing had prepared us for the fineness of the sand.  It was more like a powder that it was granules.  The ladies had their shoes off immediately but I kept my runners on.  I was already lugging a backpack load plus 2 cameras and I didn’t have enough hands or strength to carry any more.  The beach seems to run about 2 kms and is just magnificent.  There were only 2 other people in evidence so we felt quite alone with nature.  The marine iguanas were plentiful on a nearby collection of volcanic rock.  As we approached the mangrove trees at the far end we finally came upon several more marine iguanas.  A person is able to get within about 2 feet without them budging.  I know I got some great close-ups of those guys.
We also saw some great crabs in black, gaudy orange and hot pink.  Then there was the pelican sitting on a sign before he retired to a tree behind.  A graceful heron was also nearby giving us some poses.
Around the corner is a magnificent bay that seems like your own gargantuan swimming pool.  The tide was way out so it wasn’t as spectacular as usual according to Marg.  Marg is also a fellow photographer so we were having a field day with the many photo ops. I caught a nice sandpiper at the water’s edge.  This bay is sometimes frequented by the large Tortugas, sea turtles, but we didn’t happen on any this day.  On the left side of this bay is a rocky cliff that is usually occupied by blue-footed boobies and there seemed to be only one who was snoozing.  I took a very long zoom with my Sony but I know that shot won’t be the one I came for.
About 9am the crowds of Ecuadorians were arriving so we began our return trip shortly after that.  There were a plethora of these small chubby birds that were scouring the beach for morsels and the marine iguanas were leaving long trails with their big claws and long tails.   I hated to leave but the heat was just beginning.  The path back was now dominated with larger gun metal coloured Geckos who would scurry along with us for a ways before hiding, then another would pop up to take its place.
I figure that we walked 14kms for sure and the sun was getting through the clouds as we got back to town.  Believe me, the heat and humidity at the equator are things to be reckoned with.  They will sap your strength in no time and remind us that we could never live on the coast here.
The gals stopped in town for a few groceries while I desperately tried to sit in the shade.   As usual, there were sleeping sea lions dominating many of the boat docking platforms.  Barry had told me that the difference between a seal and a sea lion are their ears, seals don’t have visible ears!  Many of the boats in the harbour also have sea lions sleeping on their rear platforms.  I also thought I saw a branch moving in the ater but the movements seemed too deliberate and as it got closer I saw it was a marine iguana.  I thought right away of the scene in the movie Master and Commander when the biologist is surprised to find an iguana that actually swims.
We had a quick sandwich for lunch and then had a much needed shower again.  I can’t remember the last time I had 2 showers before noon!
Bella was reading in bed with the air-conditioner blowing before conking out.   I had gone up to the third floor terrace and soon succumbed to the invitation of the hammock after getting a few shots of the frigate birds circling about.
I tried and tried to do work on the computer before throwing in the towel.  Between crappy signal and a crappy old laptop I don’t stand a chance.
We went for supper with Barry, Max, Stu and Marg to a pizza restaurant and the meals were very good.  I don’t know why I opted for fish (tuna) instead of pizza, but I did.  We then returned home to play Mexican Train dominoes.  Bella had kicked everyone’s butt the night before and I joined in and was leading until the last hand where I beat myself by missing a play.  Oh well, I never get excited about cards or games anymore.
Off to bed because we have to be up early again tomorrow.
That was today’s excitement.  Hugs to all.

Sunday February 10/13 update  # 364
I was processing photos from Joe’s until midnight and had to hope the uploading to DropBox would be done by the time we had to leave.  I tossed and turned and looked at the clock last about 2:30am.  The alarm went off at 4:30am as we scrambled to be ready for our pick up at the corner at 5:30.   As that time rolled past I had an eerie sense of deja-vu without too many options.  Luckily my phone rang a few moments later and our driver was 5 minutes away.  When he pulled away on the wrong road I asked him what was happening.  He said he had to go back to the office to get a contract to sign.  I was none too pleased at this extra delay.
We got underway right around 6am from there and passed through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Cajas, way above the clouds at the coast.   We got to the airport close to 9am .
Airports are wearing thin with me, bouncing from lineup to lineup, but surprisingly it all gets done on time.  Everyone was loaded and seated 20 minutes early so I figured we would get underway quickly.   For some inexplicable reason our 10:50 flight didn’t leave until 11:30, go figure….
I would have enjoyed the time to relax but we had some very loud Germans behind us who were even singing for a time.  I was just wishing for a quick landing.
The initial impressions from the air, and upon landing were decidedly negative.  Landing at Balta Island is like landing on the moon without having the joy of being Neil Amstrong.   Talk about a barren place devoid of any meaningful vegetation.   They are so ecologically conscious they sprayed the overhead bins with non-harmful insecticide.  Then we had to walk around the old terminal to the far end of the new terminal and stand in line to hand in one of the two forms we had to fill out.   Next, we stood behind the rope while they hand-unloaded the luggage in an open area.  I was standing right next to our suitcase but then they made everyone funnel in in small groups from the other end, of course.   Then it was to line up to hand in the second form we had filled out.
Then we had a man waiting for us, kindly arranged y our hosts Barry & Maxine Wilder from Calgary.  He put us on the free bus that takes us down to the water taxi which moves us south to Isla Santa Cruz.  Once on the new island this man went and got his pickup truck to drive us 42 kms on rough roads to the town where are staying, Puerto Ayora.
When we get to the end of town there are political rallies going on and the President Correa himself is there but we fail to get a glimpse of him, just his vehicle.   We have to catch another water taxi for 60c across the inlet to where our home is located.  Barry and Maxine, and Stu and Marg from Calgary also, are all waiting for us and show us to our spacious quarters in this home called Mariposa.
Maxine takes us for a short walk to a neighboring beach with swimmers and then we are entertained by a playful sea lion who appeared to have lost part of its lip in a fight or something.   Nearby there were a few iguanas.  Overhead we have gorgeous frigate birds and pelicans flying around with their huge wingspans.
We catch a water taxi back into town for supper and Maxine and Marg got lured into a wonderful craft shop and made some purchases.   We had a little tour of the near area of town and they settled in at a great restaurant where Bella and I had the dinner special of stuffed chicken breast.  That was definitely one of the best meals we have had in Ecuador!
As we went back to the dock there was a sleeping sea lion on the stairs, another one entertaining us as it chased a fish in the clear water, then a pelican landed right next to me.  I got a couple of good shots before he dove into the water after a fish of his own.  Not a bad evening at all!!
The group is up playing train dominoes while I decide how to do this blog.  Working on this old laptop with uncertain screen clarity and poor software, never mind my unseeing eyeballs, I have decided to upload my photos untouched, right from the camera.  I don’t want to screw up a good shot by messing with it under these conditions.
Oh Oh, I hate to report that the Internet connection here says “excellent” because I am sitting right next to the router, but it is crap…  I can’t get my small-size photos to upload no-how.   I guess that means I will have a ton of work to do upon my return and you will have to wait to see the good stuff.
That was today’s excitement.  Hugs to all.

Saturday February 9/13  update #363
Well I finally got around to packing.  Bella, like usual, has been packed and ready for days.  We are going with one suitcase and one backpack only for the two of us.
We are basically packing for comfort in the heat although the bug situation will dictate whether we can get away with shorts or not.   I have rolled up my cloth backpack for touring around the islands rather than use the heavy laptop backpack.
I have checked the long-term forecast for the Galapagos and the temperature is to be around 84F in the day and 74F at night with the biggest chance for rain on Tuesday.   We are not accustomed to such sustained heat so I expect we will be quite uncomfortable most of the time.  Apparently our bedroom has air-conditioning so we should survive OK at night.
We have made our return to Joe’s to take their photographs after a 3-week absence.  I note they did not replace me while I was gone as they have not posted any photos in that period.   Tonight was the first night to use the new Canon T3i for the people photos.  I brought along the Sony HX1 to take the food photos since that saves me from forgetting to change settings, which I am apt to do several times a night.
It was very gratifying to see the reception I got from all the regulars at Joe’s tonight.  They said it wasn’t the same when I wasn’t there to take their pictures.  I am happy to report that the new camera performed very well.  It was also nice to meet another 4 new couples from Canada.
We are happy to see that competition has sprung up for GringoTree in the form of GringoPost.  I have groused about the outrageous ad costs now being charged by GringoTree just because they have created such a captive audience.  Thank you to the brave soul who has done this.
Some folks tonight who reside in tall buildings claim that they felt a 7.1 magnitude earthquake from Columbia at 9:20 this morning.  I am sure I was in bed at that time and never felt a thing.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Friday February 8/13  update #362
Well my flights are now booked for May 21 to June 19 for Canada prior to doing a show in Reno.  I am looking forward to having more time to spend with family and friends than I did last time.
Bella was off to do her charity work at the Weaving Store this morning so I had to hang around for Rosa’s arrival to do the housecleaning.   That gave me some time to work on a few more Pase Del Nino photos.
I am procrastinating on packing for the Galapagos.  I guess I’ll have to do that this evening and tomorrow after I check the extended forecast etc.
Everybody says it will be warm there and to bring bug spray and our own snacks.   I am not sure which I hate worst, bugs or bug spray…  We are spoiled in Cuenca with virtually no bugs.  Our only experiences on the coast beach is not very positive regarding bugs, we got eaten alive in Salinas so I even hesitate to wear shorts or short-sleeved shirts but I guess we have to bite the bullet and hope the beaches we will frequent will be tolerable.
By the time Bella got home the weather was changing to thunderstorms so any idea I had of getting out today went by the wayside.   I picked up 8 more movies yesterday and we watched “Lincoln” with Daniel Day-Lewis last night.  That is a “must-see” movie for sure.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/

Thursday February 7/13  update #361
Bella is having a rest day after her many weeks of company and travel.
Jay called so I met him downtown at Parque Calderon.   We tried to see the crypt at the main cathedral but our timing was bad so that will have to wait for another day.  We wandered over to the jewelry market and I asked around to find someone to string together my good magnetic bracelet that has been broken for 2 years.  After checking with 3 vendors they finally took me to this woman who had 25 lb test fishing line, the same as was used previously for this bracelet.  She said it would cost $1 and I smiled and said I would be back in an hour.
We went across the street to Chicago Pizza for a much needed pit stop and for Jay to have lunch.   I am trying to be a good boy and just stick to my veggies at noon but Jay ordered a pizza large enough for two, so naturally I had to be a good Samaritan and eat my share.   Thanks again Jay.
We stopped in at the Santo Domingo church which was also open and got a few nice shots.   There was a very impressive statue of an angel at the door.    Inside they had a statue of Christ with a broken arm in a glass case, so that was indeed unusual.
When we returned to the jewelry market I saw that the lady had a friend helping her and they were still not finished.  I did not say a word, I just sat and waited 15 minutes until she handed me her finished product.  It is a little on the loose side but it is holding together well.  I knew it would be a much larger task than she had anticipated so I gave her $2 and she was most appreciative.
On our way back through Parque Calderon I asked all the shoeshine men if they could do white runners and the fifth one finally said that he could.  He was handicapped and did a sloppy job and then wanted $2.50 because it was a specialty colour….  There never ceases to be surprises in Ecuador.
The lawnmower guys with the whipper-snippers were hard at work along the Yanuncay this afternoon.
We have confirmed that it is necessary for us to vote now that we are official residents.  The vote is Feb 17, the Sunday that we get back from the Galapagos at a voting station at a school about 10 blocks from here.  We find it odd to have elections on a Sunday in a Catholic country.
Bella is booking my flights to Canada and Reno along with the Reno hotel.  It is expensive because it falls in the tourist season, darn it.
That was today’s excitement.   Hugs to all.    Please see all photos at http://souvenircuenca.blogspot.com/
