Tuesday May 1/12 update

Today is a holiday in Ecuador so it was pretty quiet, and a mostly dull day for a change.

Bella had to go collect the money for the sale of her loom and then she went to another place to buy a used leather recliner for the same money.  This recliner has seen better days but it was a very expensive unit when it was new, and it is still very solid, so a crocheted throw is all it needs.  Bella now has the reading chair she has been craving.

These people with the recliner also gave Bella two $10 tickets to a concert on Thursday in Banos.   Bonus!!  Apparently the lady also has a sister that has a B+B just 10 minutes from the Quito airport that charges about $13 per night.  These are the kind of people to get to know.  How Bella finds out all these things is beyond me.

For eight hours I have been glued to my window trying to get a good video and some good photographs of my tiny friends, the hummingbirds.  I am only using the base of my hummingbird feeder on my third floor windowsill with two big silk flowers for bait.   I have seen those darn wasps today but they have luckily stayed away from my little display.  The occasional rain today has reduced the number of visits by the hummers but I feel I have been successful in getting the results I wanted.   It is hard to believe these tiny birds are about the size of my thumb and only weigh ¼ ounce!  They sure can fly like a dart, stop on a dime, and hover.  When you are a scant two feet away it is quite the sight.

I feel sorry that I have to bar the boys from the room while I am doing this, especially Peso.  He is so darn fast he would leap at a hummer and maybe right out the window.   I know he is accustomed to watching them all day from behind the screened terrace, but an open window and free access would be just too much temptation for him.  He is just a natural hunter and birds are fair game to him.

Segundo called and he has showed up at 7pm for more English tutoring by Bella.  She read him the riot act last time for making appointments and then not showing up.  We think he is a little chastened now.
