Wednesday Apr 11/12 update
I had picked up this booklet with a list of events, times
and locations for happenings every day in the month of April. We decided to try to make it to 2 artisan
shows and one dance show.
As we left the house, one of our neighbors at the end of the
block came with a friend and a baby asking for something. Bella got out her translator and the lady
typed in that her home had been broken into and she needed $20 to buy food,
etc, promising to return the money Monday night. I was going to show her that I didn’t have
$20, but that is exactly what was in my wallet so I was hooped. I don’t get any more money in Bella’s budget
until Monday either so we decided we should be able to sneak it out of our
grocery budget for a few days. We’ll
either be heroes or goats in the neighborhood, but we don’t want this to get
around so we become the neighborhood bank either. We saw them go into their house, so we
confirmed where they live and then we saw them near San Blas later too.
The first “artisan show” was 2 blocks south of the El Vergel
church and there was nothing artisan about it.
It was more like a tiny flea market and half the booths were empty. There is a very neat square nearby with a
statue of a “blacksmith?” bursting out of the earth. Down the street there were indigenous ladies
selling some of their very colorful wares.
The second “artisan show” was in the
San Blas Square and that was much better
with some actual handicrafts, clothing and contractors with booths.

Then we went over to the Plaza Civica between the 9
th
of October Mercado and the Rotary Market.
We had a lovely pork lunch with potato cakes, onions and a Pepsi for $5
total.

Then there was to be a dance show at 2pm in the plaza and they had music set up and
several gazebo covers around the perimeter.
The time passed and one slightly inebriated fellow entertained us for a
while.

Only ½ a dance group showed up and they spent their time
repairing costumes. Bella left at 2:30
to go home and do some baking. I asked
the music man when the show would begin and he said 3pm. I said “Ecuador time?” and he laughed and
nodded. I amused myself watching the
children sprinkle feed for the hundreds of pigeons then delighting in chasing
them.
At 3:30 enough was enough of Ecuador time and I gave the music
man a disgusted look and left. While on
the #50 home I saw these folks shaving sugar cane stalks, then a kids’ soccer
(futbol) practice.
Enjoy the pics and movies.
That was today’s excitement. Hugs
to all.
