Easter Sunday April 8, 2012

Easter Sunday Apr 8/12 update
We heard this beautiful music with wonderful voices which started about 11:30 last night and we thought it was a party starting in the park to the south.  Upon investigation we discovered this mariachi band serenading a family in a home from the narrow street.  We are assuming there were newlyweds in this home who were benefiting from these love songs.  They stopped almost at the stroke of midnight and the neighborhood was soon very quiet again.
Happy Easter everyone.  May the Good Lord smile upon you always.
I got up early to head to El Centro to try to capture some of the Easter celebrations.  I got a few shots in 3 different churches and some movies of the mass in the Immaculate Conception cathedral, with the pews full to capacity.
I also finally found a beautiful crucifix to compliment our Ecuadorian home from a vendor outside the cathedral.  Can you believe this was only $15!  I even got a gift of a small bracelet in the bargain.
It was raining lightly but that didn’t stop the outside celebrations starting to get underway in Parque Calderon.
I heard them announce something about a procession or demonstration from San Blas so I started to head that way and encountered a small parade just exiting San Blas Square, with bands, ethnic dancers, and ending with a tribute to the bountiful produce they grow in this area.  Every spectator was huddled under the overhangs on the north side of the street, out of the rain.
At 3:30pm we headed west to visit briefly with Bettye and Chris in their seventh-floor spacious Palermo apartment in GringoLand.  It is about 2,000 sq ft, with a gorgeous view, and is furnished for $800 a month.
We all then headed south from there to Manon Stephenson’s place on Los Pinos, next door to Joe’s Secret Garden for an Easter supper.  Manon plays bridge occasionally with Bella.  There were about 100 people there who brought a pot luck item along with their own drinks.  Bella’s broccoli salad was gone very quickly.  It was wall to wall people, inside and outside, with most of the smokers taking the best outside spots.  We met many more nice people and it was a treat to have all English-speaking people and a North American spread of food.  We met one American couple that have lived here for 3 years and are going to visit Banff and Lake Louise in September.   This gathering was very noisy and fun.  Manon had a lot of guts inviting almost anyone who wanted to join in.   I had to compliment Manon on her eclectic collection of art.  We are kindred spirits there.
Enjoy the pics and the videos.    That was today’s excitement.  Hugs to all.
